Five heroes of volunteer work: medals for commitment in Ostallgäu!
Last weekend the Bavarian State Sports Association (BLSV) volunteer day took place in picturesque Bedernau in the Lower Allgäu. Here, five deserving volunteers from the Ostallgäu and Kaufbeuren districts were awarded a certificate of honor and a medal from the Swabia district. This honor is not only a nice gesture, but also shows how important volunteering is for our society.
In his speech, Deputy District Council President Alfons Weber emphasized the central role of voluntary work in our community. Unterallgäu District Administrator Alex Eder added that the volunteer work was “priceless”. Eder warmly thanked the honorees for their tireless commitment and the time they invest in their sporting and social activities.
The award winners in detail
This time the awards went to personalities who have been committed to sport and the community over many years:
Unfortunately, the other prize winners,Franz Hoferfrom the Rad Club Kaufbeuren andKlaus Merkfrom the Atlantis Kaufbeuren diving club, will not be present on this day. Hofer has been involved in racing bike training for over 30 years, while Merk has been on the board for 15 years and trains numerous diving instructors.
Volunteering in sport – an important basis
Voluntary work is always seen as a supporting pillar, not only in the sporting sector, but in society as a whole. Loud Bavaria Youth Around 300,000 people are involved in sport in Bavaria alone. “Volunteering is the ultimate form of democracy,” emphasized BLSV district chairwoman Barbara Hernes during another event. The valuable commitment of the volunteers, who are considered “true ambassadors” of our community, was recognized.
In Germany there are also around 75,000 volunteers who work as referees in a wide variety of sports. This role is central to ensuring fair competition and can be undertaken from as young as 12 years old. However, those interested must first complete training hours and take exams, such as Maltese explained.
You can already mark your calendar today for the next volunteer day of the four Allgäu sports districts: it will take place in Kaufbeuren in 2026 and will hopefully bring many more committed citizens into the spotlight.
