Cross-border exercise in Haidmühle: rescue workers in action!
What an exciting day in Haidmühle, Freyung-Grafenau district! On July 17, 2025, an exciting cross-border exercise to search for missing persons after a plane crash took place there. The Freyung police station took responsibility for this event, which was all about cooperation and commitment. The aim of the exercise was to optimize cross-border cooperation with Czech authorities and to strengthen the skills of all emergency services involved. The exercise was led by Police Chief Inspector Georg Binder and brought together numerous organizations, all working hand in hand.
The participants included not only the local police station and the Waldkirchen police station, but also the Passau border police station and the central emergency services from Landshut. The joint center in Schwandorf was also represented. And not to forget: rescue workers from the Bavarian Red Cross and firefighters from the region were actively involved in the event to achieve the best results.
Emergency forces working together
The scenario for this exercise was not chosen by chance. The plane crash that served as the starting point occurred about three years ago in the Freyung-Grafenau district and presented the emergency services with major challenges. The measures practiced are intended to ensure that in an emergency everyone involved works together efficiently and that communication and coordination of the search and rescue forces run smoothly.
A particular focus was on working with our Czech colleagues. These cross-border operations often come with their own challenges, such as different regulations or procedures. But as the exercise showed, a lot can be mastered with good preparation and clear communication.
Experiences and lessons for the future
This type of exercise is important not only for the organizations involved, but also for the population. It promotes trust in the emergency services and shows that they are well prepared for an emergency. Similar exercises are also taking place in other regions, such as the Netherlands, where a cross-border exercise on September 13, 2022 simulated a traffic accident with injured people. Here, too, various organizations worked closely together to ensure the safety of citizens and to further train the emergency services.
The results of the exercises speak for themselves: fast, professional action and active collaboration are the key to success. Thanks to the dedicated emergency services in Bavaria and beyond, citizens in the relevant regions are well protected and can rely on a slightly different type of security.
