Würzburg is going green: 30 trees planned for a shady market place!

There will soon be a green coat of paint in the heart of Würzburg. The Lower Market Square is to be upgraded with the installation of around 30 large pots filled with trees up to six meters high. This measure was recently presented to the Environment Committee and aims to make the area shadier and friendlier. The trees, which will have a diameter of 2.5 meters, not only have the task of providing shade, but also of increasing the quality of stay for visitors. This reports Radio chime.

But not everything is unproblematic. The placement of the trees might impose some restrictions, especially during festivals such as the traditional wine village. Here the stalls may need to be adapted to the new circumstances. The city council will vote next week on the first step regarding the installation of eight to fourteen trees. The estimated cost of this project is around 500,000 euros. A permanent location directly in the ground is not possible due to the market garage underneath.

Funding for urban greening

But Würzburg is doing even more to green its city. With the municipal funding program “Urban Greenery and Climate Adaptation”, the city government wants to transform urban areas and backyards into green oases. The advantages are obvious: higher quality of life, increased well-being and an improvement in the general health of Würzburg residents. How Würzburg.de As described, plants have a cooling effect, reduce pollutants and improve the urban climate.

The funding program includes a variety of measures, such as the complete unsealing of areas to restore natural soil functions and the creation of community and school gardens. It is important that the funding only applies to private, voluntary projects that are not required by public law. All Würzburgers, initiatives, associations and companies can submit an application, although the consent of the owners is required if the measures are not carried out on their own property.

What's next?

Interested citizens who would like to actively advocate for a greener Würzburg should first think about a greening idea and seek advice. Cost estimates can then be obtained and the funding application submitted before the measure begins. Once approved, implementation can take place and financial support will be provided.
