Mozart Festival in Würzburg: friendship, music and unforgettable sounds!
This year's Mozart Festival in Würzburg is entering its new round with a magnificent opening event. Under the motto “Friend Mozart,” the organizers show how important friendship was in Mozart’s life and how it shaped his musical work. Artistic director Evelyn Meining has developed a program that highlights the humanity and special relationships of the composer. It's not for nothing that the flower shop at Würzburg train station quotes Mozart's view of friendship, as this aspect runs like a common thread through the festival.
The festival season this year extends from May 23rd to June 22nd, 2025, and it will be top-class right from the start. Pianist William Youn will provide the opening concert and perform Mozart's Piano Concerto in A major KV 414 with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta under the direction of Candida Thompson. Particularly interesting: In the second movement, Mozart quotes the overture “La calamità dei cuori” by Johann Christian Bach, which gives Youn the opportunity to pay tribute to the late composer friend Bach in a touching way.
Musical highlights
Another star who was won for the festival is the viola player Nils Mönkemeyer. He plays the viola version of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A major KV 622, which was originally written for the clarinetist Anton Stadler. Mönkemeyer's playing will convey an inner conflict and illustrate how much friendship is also expressed in music.
Around eleven concerts are on the program, many of them dedicated to works that Mozart addressed to friends. A special highlight is the premiere of a commissioned work by Manfred Trojahn, who was invited as a portrait composer to shed light on his relationship with Mozart. In addition, soprano Christiane Karg and the Aris Quartet will perform songs by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Mendelssohn, all of which address the theme of friendship.
A festival for young and old
The Würzburg Mozart Festival, which was founded in 1921 and is now the oldest existing Mozart festival in Germany, offers more than just classical concerts. Venues include the Kaisersaal of the Würzburg Residence and the idyllic Hofgarten. There are also special experiences in wine cellars and even post-industrial environments to introduce audiences to the world of Mozart in new ways.
With around 35,000 visitors every year and a wealth of concerts, workshops and discussions that take place in the tried and tested “MozartLabor”, the festival has a very special appeal. It is also awarded the EFFE label, which stands for innovative concepts and social commitment in culture.
In addition, the friendship between Nadezhda von Meck and Pjotr Tchaikovsky is discussed by Corinna Harfouch in order to illustrate the universal importance of these interpersonal bonds. The festival is one step further than just celebrating Mozart; it's about putting your values in the context of friendship and human connection.
As Albert Einstein once said, “Music is the language of friendship.” A thought that runs through the entire festival days. Whether at the end of Mozart Day or at the innovative Jupiter Night - the Mozart Festival offers something for everyone. The anticipation for the upcoming events couldn't be greater! It remains exciting to see what musical surprises and deep insights await us here. For a detailed overview of the events, it is worth taking a look at the official Mozartfest website or the reporting at BR-KLASSIK and FAZ.
