Power play for the 2026 local elections: Who will be the new mayor?
The region is already looking ahead to the upcoming local elections in March 2026. The starting signal will be given with the first of three themed weeks, which will run from September 6th to 13th. Under the motto “The power of local politics”, the focus of the reporting is primarily on the influence of local politics and its limits. As the NN reported, current challenges are also considered in this context, such as the last few months, in which the forest fire in Tennenlohe caused a great stir. The disaster was lifted on May 4, 2025 by District Administrator Alexander Tritthart after the emergency services were able to largely stabilize the dangerous situation.
The theme week is also dedicated to the dependence on large companies in cities such as Erlangen and Forchheim as well as the abuse of power by local politicians. A recent exciting vote, for example, was the alliance of several parties in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district against the CSU, which made people sit up and take notice. In addition, the start of the theme week coincided with a moment in which Marcus König from the CSU is considered the favorite for the mayoral election.

The current situation regarding the forest fire in Tennenlohe is a stark reminder of the responsibility that local politicians bear. Less than 24 hours after the disaster was lifted, numerous emergency services are still on duty. Twelve members of the Technical Relief Agency and nine firefighters are on site in shifts around the clock. As the Wiesentbote As we know, nine fellow firefighters suffered minor injuries during the extinguishing work, which underlines the challenges and risks of these operations. In total, several hundred personnel were deployed to contain the flames and minimize the danger to the population.
The public is urged to observe the existing rules of conduct and to avoid the area between the OBI roundabout and the wild horse enclosure. A huge thank you goes to the people who gave everything to fight the fire. These events show how important local politics are for the safety and well-being of citizens.
