Medals of honor for rescuers: flood relief in southern Bavaria recognized!
On November 27, 2024, a significant honor was presented to 90 dedicated helpers from various organizations in the Miltenberg district. This award, which was presented on behalf of Prime Minister Markus Söder and Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann, underlines the tireless efforts that these people made during one of the worst flood disasters in Germany. During the flood events in 2021, 93 people from the districts of Miltenberg, Main-Spessart, Hassberge, Bad Kissingen and the city of Würzburg were on duty for a total of seven days to help the affected regions. Deputy District Administrator Bernd Schötterl, District Fire Officer Martin Spilger and Mayor Gernot Winter emphasized the excellent cooperation between the various organizations in their speeches.

In Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia, over 40,000 people were in urgent need of help, and many lost their belongings. The German Red Cross (DRK) was active with immediate aid and long-term projects, thereby ensuring a significant contribution to emergency care. According to information from DRK In the following years, many people in Bavaria and other federal states also suffered from the consequences of the natural disaster.
Use of helpers and challenges

They disposed of heating oil from basements, secured hazardous areas and worked hard to limit consequential damage. It is impressive to know that around 160 responders were supported through a scheduled personnel rotation on the third day of the operation, highlighting the need for strategic planning and comprehensive training.
Mayor Gernot Winter praised the courage and professionalism of the helpers, while Schötterl emphasized how important it was to prepare well for future operations. The helpers' commitment was accompanied musically by a brass quartet from the Franconian Rebläuse Bürgstadt and gave the event a festive atmosphere.
