Dangerous heat wave is rolling into Bavaria – How to protect yourself!

From Friday, June 14, 2025, Bavaria will have a hot day ahead. With temperatures of up to 35 degrees expected especially in the regions of Bad Kissingen, Main-Spessart, Aschaffenburg, Miltenberg and Würzburg, the German Weather Service (DWD) has issued an official warning about heat. This applies from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and affects not only people, but also nature. Especially at heights of up to 200 meters, extreme heat stress is expected, which can be problematic for health. Weather experts therefore recommend avoiding the sun's rays as much as possible and drinking enough fluids.

A short “intermezzo” is expected on Thursday, June 12th, during which temperatures will still reach a pleasant 22 to 28 degrees. But by Friday at the latest, the heat wave can no longer be stopped and the temperatures could even break the 32 degree mark locally. Things will be particularly tricky on Saturday, when temperatures of up to 35 degrees are forecast in cities like Kitzingen and Aschaffenburg, accompanied by a UV index of 9 out of 11, which indicates very high levels of solar radiation. Anyone who stays in the sun for too long risks sunstroke or sunburn, which is why protective measures are extremely important.

Health risks in view

As meteorological experts from [Merkur] point out, in addition to heat, UV radiation is also of great importance. The UV hazard index for the region will reach at least 8 on Friday. This means a high health risk from the sun. Older people, pregnant women, children and people with chronic illnesses are particularly affected. The steady increase in skin cancer cases in Bavaria speaks for itself: While only 29,250 cases were registered in 2005, there will already be 71,150 in 2023.

Experts from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) warn about the health effects of heat and call for a comprehensive heat protection concept. Heat is expected to increase in the coming decades due to climate change, highlighting the need for a preventative strategy. The cooperation of various ministries and institutions is essential to ensure effective protection for particularly affected groups.

Heat Coping Tips

To counteract the oppressive temperatures, there are some practical tips that have proven to be effective. Physical activities should be postponed to the cooler morning and evening hours. Ventilating your apartment early in the morning and shading the rooms can also help keep the heat out. Another way to cool down when temperatures are high is with foot baths or cooling lotions. Experts also recommend not staying in a parked car for a long time and storing medications in a cool place.

It is clear that the coming days will be very challenging. Everyone who lives and works in the affected regions should prepare well in order to survive the heat as unscathed as possible.
