Steinbühlstraße in Forchheim: Bridges opened - cyclists and pedestrians cheer!
Forchheim, Deutschland - Steinbühlstraße in Forchheim has opened again for traffic. Mayor Dr. Uwe Kirschstein celebrated the official reopening together with head of the presentation René Franz and Uwe Kredel, the head of the civil engineering office. This marking is not only a gratifying sign of the voltage of traffic, but also the result of extensive construction work that had already started in August 2024.
The northern bridge at the train station is now accessible to cyclists and pedestrians, while the southern bridge in Steinbühlstrasse remains closed to motorized traffic. According to the new regulations, cars may only drive to the beginning of the northern bridge on the southern bridge. In addition, turning to the right into Steinbühlstraße is signaled with a "passage prohibited" sign. Here you have clearly taken a step towards a safe traffic management, which is particularly taken into account the needs of pedestrians and cyclists.
new bridge without weight restriction
The renovation and new construction of the bridges were necessary, since the old bridge over the Wiesent was only approved for vehicles up to a maximum of 12 tons. With the new building, there will now be no longer any weight restrictions. This innovation will have a positive effect on the traffic conditions and the load -bearing capacity of the bridge, as reported by the government of Upper Franconia
The new blueprints provide for a widened roadway and a special sidewalk with an increased curb, which makes use for pedestrians safer. A promotion of up to 750,000 euros for this measure comes from the Free State of Bavaria, whereby a funding rate of 75 percent was achieved from the Bavarian Financial Effect Act. This is not only financially advantageous for the city of Forchheim, but also a sign of the recognition of the project by the state bodies.
complex construction work and high costs
The construction work carried out by the company Strabag and the Adwikar engineering office was anything but simple. In addition to the bridges, water and gas pipes were also relocated, underground power lines were taken into account and the plans had to be carried out carefully due to the proximity to existing bridges. The total costs for the entire renovation measures amount to around 3.2 million euros.
The city of Forchheim has now modernized an important infrastructural connection, which will sustainably improve both traffic change and the safety of pedestrians and cyclists in the region. Every project has its challenges, but this shows that a lot can be moved with a good hand and the right financial support.
