Shaping the future: Students show creative ways for sustainable education

On July 3, 2025, an exciting day of action on education for sustainable development (ESD) took place in Erlangen. Organized by environmental officer Sabine Bock and other representatives, numerous stands presented various topics related to sustainability, which were primarily designed by school children and young people. This was about creative projects that are intended to raise awareness of environmentally conscious actions.

A colorful range of topics was represented: from school gardens and potato cultivation to school bees and laser cutter projects, there was really a lot to participate and learn here. Things got particularly creative with the craft work with natural materials and the Earth Children's Plan exhibition. Media such as podcasts and films were also not neglected. The event gave young people the opportunity to present their promising ideas and projects that are intended to stimulate sustainable development.

Creative participation activities and wishes of young people

A highlight of the hands-on activities was the sale of homemade items from the school garden and all sorts of creative products. The students were not only contact persons for their projects, but were also available to answer questions and share their experiences. The young people's collected wishes were recorded in a wish globe sculpture. These ideas range from calling for more excursions and accessible ramps to environmental protection measures and anti-bullying projects. It shows that young people care about the future shape of our society.

“More fair trade and regional products, peace and politics against the right” were also central themes in the ideas that the young people brought up. This also reflects the increasing sensitivity of young people to global issues that are not only important locally, but also nationally and internationally.

ESD and the global goals of the 2030 Agenda

The day in Erlangen is in the context of the global trend towards education for sustainable development. In 2015, the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda, which includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals not only concern individual actions, but also require educational institutions to ensure that education is inclusive, fair and of high quality. Goal 4 of the SDGs is particularly important for the educational landscape: “Ensure inclusive, equal and high-quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for everyone,” as bildungsportal-niedersachsen.de explains.

Target 4.7 also highlights the importance of education for sustainable development. By 2030, all learners should acquire basic knowledge and skills for a sustainable lifestyle. Aspects such as human rights, gender equality and a culture of peace are central pillars that should be anchored in education. The ESD approaches at the event in Erlangen therefore make an important contribution to achieving these goals.

Overall, the Education for Sustainable Development Day shows that young people are ready to take responsibility and actively contribute to shaping the sustainable future with their own projects. The variety of topics and the commitment of the kids encourage people to think and act, for respectful and resource-saving coexistence in society.
