New wind in the Würzburg priest seminar: Reder and Lutz!

The Roman Catholic Church in Würzburg is faced with an exciting upheaval: has announced a new management for the seminar. From October 1, 2025, 53-year-old Auxiliary Bishop Paul Reder will take over the rainy after Bishop Dr. Franz announced the new occupation. Reder, who was born in Würzburg in 1971 and comes from the parish of Sankt Peter and Paul, has a lot of experience. He studied Catholic theology and philosophy from 1990 to 1996 at the University of Würzburg and was ordained a priest in 2014.

In that time since his consecration, Reder has taken on various pastoral activities, including as a chaplain and pastor in several parishes. From 2019 to 2023 he was part of the priestly council and was appointed pastor of the parish community "Heiligkreuz and Sankt Elisabeth" in 2020. Most recently, he was bishop's vicar for the priests in the diocese until 2024 and also took care of emergency pastoral care and prevention in connection with sexual attacks.

new faces in the seminar

With Paul Reder, a fresh wind comes to the seminar, but he is not the only one who will start in a new role. Dr. Christian Lutz, 49 years old, is the new Subregens and is currently a moderator of the pastoral area Haßberge West and dean of the Deanery Haßberge. Lutz was also born in Würzburg and was ordained a priest in 2004 after completing his studies at the Pontifical University of Gregoriana in Rome.

DOMVICAR PAUL Weismantel, who has headed spirituality in the seminar for more than two decades, remains in his role and is confirmed in his further tasks. The 69-year-old Weekmantel brings an impressive career, which includes regional youth pastoral care and many years in the Diocese of Würzburg. His experience is invaluable for the training of young priests.

a warm welcome for the Auxiliary Bishop

The consecration of Paul Reder to the Auxiliary Bishop took place on May 9, 2024 in Kiliansdom in Würzburg, led by Bishop Franz Jung. In this solemn ceremony, which attracted numerous guests from church, politics and the community, the importance of the community was emphasized. In a moving final address, the bishop himself addressed the challenges and temptations within the church, and illustrated with a painted horse he received from a child, the Christian responsibility for those people who are often overlooked.

Würzburg's mayor Christian Schuchardt (CDU) was positive about the future cooperation with Reder and emphasized the value of solidarity in the city. Reder follows Auxiliary Bishop Ulrich Boom, who left office in September 2022 and became known for his positive presence.

The new occupation in the seminar and the fresh impulses by Paul Reder and his colleagues are an exciting development not only for the church but also for the whole city. The diocese relies on continuity and at the same time on new ways that are supposed to promote an inviting and lively church. We can be excited to see how these changes will have an impact in the coming time.
