Birds of prey in Bavaria: illegally poisoned - perpetrator still unknown!
In the Bavarian forests, it is bubbling: Six months after the terrifying incident, in which a strictly protected bird of prey was poisoned with the advertised poison Carbofuran, the investigation is still without any significant success. For example, BR has not yet been tracked down, although the killing of birds
Carbofuran is considered particularly dangerous and has been banned in the EU since 2008. The method with which the bird recorded the toxic substances is as perfidious as it was shocking: it was attracted into the forest with the poison. Nicole Meier from the Landesbund for Bird and Nature Conservation (LBV) reports a total of 34 animals in which there was a suspected poisoning. This suspicion was confirmed in 14 cases. Two poison baits have already been found, while the toxicological results are still standing for a further four cases.

Last year 13 poisoned birds of prey and a poisoned pigeon in Bavaria were detected. However, this is only the tip of the iceberg, because the experts assume that only about five percent of the killings are actually discovered. "There is a high number of unreported cases," says Bettina Schröfl from the LBV district group Straubing-Bogen. Their suspicion is that the perpetrators often take the dead birds secretly before they can be secured.

The project "Tatort Natur", which documents the cases of the illegal killings of birds of prey in Bavaria, once again shows that the problem is nationwide. In addition to poisoning, illegal traps and the shooting of birds of prey also occur. Reports show that red kites, buzzards and falcons are particularly affected. The methods are often repulsive: occasionally living pigeons are prepared as baits with poison to attract and kill the birds of prey. Information about this was also made by researching
Despite all the efforts of the police and the public prosecutor, no one has been accountable to account. This is not only due to the remote crime scenes, where there are rarely witness information, but also because the suspects seem well informed. So far there is no suspect in the case of the red kallmilan from Wallkofen. Nature conservation organizations and the police suspect that hunters or racing pigeons could have a motif to switch off hunting competitors or protect their house pigeons. These machinations not only endanger the survival of the birds of prey, but also represent a threat to the entire biodiversity in Bavaria. Protecting the birds of prey in Bavaria is an important concern for nature conservation. Further information about the topic and current developments will continue to be pursued to stop these illegal practices. The search for the perpetrators
