Two women caught illegally fishing in Gauting!

In Gauting, in Ledererpark, an incident on Saturday evening caused a stir. Two 28-year-old women were caught illegally fishing in the Würm River at around 7:20 p.m. Passers-by noticed the two of them carrying a safety net. Despite obvious prohibition signs, they were not deterred and had already caught 14 fish - including roach and barbel. Five of these fish were already dead and stowed in airtight plastic bags when the alert police arrived and stopped the activity. The women also asked a 32-year-old resident to leave the area so as not to scare the fish away.

The police stopped the action and secured the safety net. The two women could not produce any fishing permits. A complaint was filed for fish poaching and a violation of the Animal Welfare Act. A police officer professionally put the live fish back into the Würm, which shows that the protection of local waters is taken seriously.

Illegal fishing in Germany

The incidents in Gauting are not an isolated case. Germany is one of the largest importers of fishery products in the EU and plays a central role in the implementation of the IUU Regulation (Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing). Traders are advised to check the fisheries from which they source their products to minimize the risk of illegally caught fish. The WWF, together with other environmental associations, is campaigning for a strong EU control regulation to ensure the traceability of fishery products from source to plate.

A thorough testing process is necessary to ensure that no products from illegal fishing reach the market. Politicians must decide whether sufficient resources are made available to carry out effective controls. WWF has also developed a fisheries supply chain risk assessment guide to address these challenges.

The events in Gauting make it clear that illegal fishing is not just a local problem, but is also part of a larger issue that begins on our doorstep. A good hand in handling our waters is required in order to preserve biodiversity and the health of our rivers.
