Tragedy at Lake Starnberg: Two swimming accidents, one dead and one missing!
Two tragic swimming accidents occurred at Lake Starnberg on June 15, 2025, which shocked the region. The day that began with beautiful weather ended in deep sadness for two families.
The first incident took place around 1:30 p.m. when a 32-year-old father was traveling with his family in an electric boat. He jumped into the water to cool off, but quickly ran into trouble and was unable to stay afloat. Despite a quick rescue by the crew of a passing motorboat, he was already unconscious when the water rescue service arrived. Unfortunately, attempts by emergency doctors to resuscitate him were unsuccessful and the man died.
The missing student
Just twenty minutes later, another dramatic incident occurred. A 23-year-old Indian student also jumped into the water but sank. His friends who tried to save him ended up in trouble themselves. The alerted water rescue team, supported by the Starnberg water police, immediately initiated comprehensive search measures. These included the use of drones, search dogs and a sonar boat, but the student remains missing to date.
The DLRG (German Life Saving Society) reported that a total of 411 people died from drowning nationwide in 2023 - an increase of 31 deaths compared to the previous year. The President of the DLRG, Ute Vogt, expressed the hope that these numbers will make more people aware of the dangers of water sports. Families with small children in particular should be warned in the coming months in order to avoid tragic accidents.
A worrying trend
The two swimming accidents at Lake Starnberg are not just isolated cases, but part of a worrying trend. The DLRG has recorded an increase in drowning cases in recent years. The decline in peak season accidents suggests the need to increase water education and safety. With the warmer months just around the corner, it is to be hoped that such tragic incidents will not become the norm.
The two accidents remind us that even on beautiful summer days, the dangers of water should never be underestimated. Our thoughts are with the affected families during this difficult time.
