Nursing conference in Starnberg: Together against the challenges!

The first official nursing conference in Starnberg (PfleKo STA) recently took place in the Starnberg district office, an event format that is dedicated to the central challenge in nursing under the motto “Only together can we make a difference”. District Administrator Stefan Frey opened the conference and discussed the approximately 5,200 people in need of care in the region. What is particularly noteworthy is that 76% of them are cared for at home, with more than half of this care provided by relatives. This makes it clear how important the exchange of support is, because the challenges in care are constantly growing. In addition to professional care through outpatient services, the importance of family support is becoming ever greater.

In her speech, Bettina Richter, the chairwoman of PfleKo, emphasized the urgent future challenges that society faces due to demographic change. In Germany, 5.69 million people are already in need of care and this number is constantly increasing. An increase in supply demand is forecast by 2035. PfleKo, which was founded on July 15, 2024, has set itself the task of raising awareness of the topic of care and creating networks. A first step in this direction was the Care Action Week, which took place from May 12th to 18th, 2025.

Networking and new projects

The forty-four participants in the first general meeting of the PfleKo STA, which took place on July 21, 2025, dealt intensively with the work of the past year. Representatives of 49 member organizations and numerous actors from the nursing sector exchanged views on the nursing situation in the Starnberg district. District Administrator Frey emphasized the crucial need for living space for nursing staff. The projects that emerged from this initiative include “Giving Care a Home” and “Housing for Help.” The latter promotes living partnerships between young people and seniors or people in need of help, thus offering a win-win situation for both sides.

A special online portal was set up to bring together nursing staff and housing offers (www.pflekosta.de), which represents a further incentive to set the course for a shared future. These projects are becoming increasingly popular, particularly in view of demographic developments, where the need for care increases with increasing age. As an example: around 11% of 70 to 74 year olds are in need of care, while the rate for those over 90 is highest at 87%.

Outlook for the future

The nursing conference, which is scheduled to take place annually, is planning its next week of action for May 2026. The district of Starnberg and the Free State of Bavaria are supporting these initiatives with financial support of 4,600 euros. With these efforts, PfleKo STA would like to make a lasting contribution to improving the situation of people in need of care while at the same time keeping the needs of all those involved in mind. The developments in the care industry are not only a challenge, but also an opportunity to make a difference together - and that is the motto that characterizes the conference.
