Starnberg Colon Cancer Center: Certification ensures excellent treatment!

There is good news for the healthcare landscape in Munich's southwest: the Starnberg Colon Cancer Center recently received certification from the German Cancer Society (DKG). This was achieved under the leadership of Chief Physician Susanne Rogers and Chief Physician David Anz and is evidence of the high quality and expertise in the treatment of colon cancer. Certification is not only a sign of medical excellence, but also an important confirmation that the center meets strict professional requirements. Süddeutsche Zeitung reports that comparable awards are only given to a few clinics that stand out for their excellent performance.

But what does this actually mean for the region? The Starnberg center, which closes an important gap in Munich's southwest, sees itself as a contact point for patients from the surrounding area, but also for those seeking refuge beyond district borders. In 2024, over 100 patients have already been treated here, thus reaching the minimum number of the DKG. This positive development underlines the necessity and success of the offer, which focuses primarily on preventative measures and early detection.

The path to treatment

The colorectal cancer center offers comprehensive, cross-disciplinary and cross-district diagnostics. Patients benefit from an interdisciplinary approach, as experts from various disciplines discuss the cases in weekly tumor conferences. The goal is to develop the best oncological concept for each individual patient. After all, the treatment of colon cancer is complex, and regular colonoscopies by a gastroenterologist are strongly recommended in order to detect tumors early or even to remove them endoscopically. Klinikum Starnberg emphasizes that if colon cancer cannot be treated, all necessary examinations will still be initiated.

Incidentally, a third of patients do not require surgery, which shows how far medicine has advanced in the treatment of colon cancer. For larger tumors, modern therapeutic approaches allow a combination of different treatments. Surgical methods are largely carried out using the keyhole technique, which not only makes the procedure itself easier, but is also associated with lower complication rates - another plus point for the Starnberg Clinic.

A strong team in the background

“We are proud of this certification and the commitment of our entire team,” said Chief Physician Rogers. This attitude is reflected in daily work, because support in all phases of the illness is central. Be it through employees in the clinic itself or external offers of help - every patient is cared for holistically. Patients are also asked about familial colorectal cancer, their general condition and psychological stress in order to guarantee comprehensive care.

The new hospital reform, which has been in force since January 1, 2023, also requires that service groups be assigned to clinics by the end of 2026. In the wake of these developments, it remains to be seen what impact this will have on medical care in clinics, patients and the entire healthcare system. However, these uncertainties can also be seen as an incentive to continue to seek improvements and adjustments in treatment and care. Another important focus is on the early detection of colon cancer, one of the most common causes of cancer death - around 75% of patients who die from it were not regularly examined. This is where the Starnberg Colon Cancer Center comes in with its approach to prevention and early detection.

Anyone interested has the opportunity to contact the secretariat and receive individual information about treatment or upcoming appointments. Because one thing is clear: the earlier you take prevention, the better the chances of successful treatment.
