Esslingen starts a major citizens' campaign: improve cycling and walking traffic!
A comprehensive local mobility concept is currently being developed in Esslingen, which is intended to significantly improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists. The city actively involved citizens and carried out a public online participation, which was a complete success. According to the Stuttgarter Nachrichten, almost 2,800 people entered their opinions on existing main and secondary routes on two interactive maps and submitted almost 700 suggestions for walking and cycling. This clearly shows that the population of Esslingen has a lively interest in the design of their urban transport routes.
The feedback from citizens has now been reviewed with the aim of creating a comfortable, safe and continuous network for walking and cycling. The results not only show wishes, but also deficiencies and suggestions for improvement for the urban area. Some of the suggestions have already been incorporated into the updated network plans, which are now available online. The city emphasizes that it will continue to welcome suggestions from citizens' committees as well as associations and organizations involved in walking and cycling.
Citizen participation and further steps
Particular attention is paid to ensuring that each district should offer a continuous route to the city center. Online participation to improve pedestrian and cycle paths began on March 31, 2025 and ended on April 28, 2025, with citizens having until July 8 to submit further comments to their citizens' committee. The concept, which the city has been working on since the end of 2023, aims to identify important routes for walking and cycling and to prioritize the corresponding measures.
After the final definition of the pedestrian and cycling networks, a comprehensive program of measures will be developed, which includes standards such as minimum widths for cycle lanes and the barrier-free design of footpaths. This program is intended to help cyclists and pedestrians feel safe and comfortable in Esslingen. In this context, the city officials are pleased about the active participation and the many creative ideas from the citizens.
