Lovis Corinth: The magical Bildrausch” exhibition in Regensburg!
Art history comes to life in Regensburg: on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of Lovis Corinth's death, this is demonstrated Art Forum East German Gallery the impressive exhibition “Bildrausch”. Already today, on November 8, 2025, visitors can immerse themselves in the fascinating world of the artist, whose path to success was rather rocky. Corinth, born in Tapiau in 1858, earned his place in the art world late: he sold his first work at the age of 37.
The Kunstforum's collection includes an impressive twelve paintings, over 500 works on paper and all of Corinth's sketchbooks. The exhibition sheds light on the artist's development and the different phases of his work. What's special: Digital media allows visitors to browse through the sketchbooks and find out more about how the works were created. A highlight are the rare early works and important major works that come from the Kunstforum's extensive collection and loans, such as scenes from rural life and atmospheric landscapes from Lake Walchensee.
Unique insights into Corinth's work process
The technique that Corinth used in his paintings can be seen in the speed with which the representational dissolves. The exhibition covers the artist's entire creative period, including his individual development into a pioneer of modernism. Accompanying media stations offer further insights into the painting technique and the career of the works, while an inventory catalog and an exhibition catalog are available.
The exhibition “Lovis Corinth – Bildrausch” runs until January 18, 2026. Corinth’s work will then be on display at the Munich Central Institute for Art History from November 22, 2025. The works there are also supplemented with digital technologies, so that visitors have the opportunity to explore art history interactively. Corinth's life story and artistic legacy are supported by the regular travels of his daughter Wilhelmine, who negotiates exhibitions in Germany so that his name lives on.
An exciting legacy
Corinth, who died of pneumonia in 1925, left behind a rich collection that is managed by his descendants. His son Thomas and his daughter Wilhelmine are actively involved in preserving their father's legacy and presenting it at exhibitions. It is not surprising that some of his works were once classified as “degenerate” by the National Socialists, while today's art lovers celebrate his innovative approaches.
The “Bildrausch” exhibition not only invites you to engage with Corinth’s work, but also opens a dialogue about the diversity of art and its development in the 20th century. Corinth is more than just a name in art history - it is a symbol of artistic freedom and the tireless urge to create.
