Chemnitz 2025: Capital of Culture celebrates the unknown – secure your entry now!

Next July 2, 2025, the city of Chemnitz invites you to the opening event of its time as European Capital of Culture in the M26 (Maximilianstrasse 26). Under the title “Capital of Culture – what is, what remains, what can become?” Visitors can expect exciting insights and discussions about the future development of this important award. Ulf Kallscheidt, program manager of “Chemnitz 2025”, and Dagmar Ruscheinskey, the mayor of Chemnitz, are expected as the most prominent guests. The event will be moderated by Wolfgang Dersch, the city's cultural representative. Admission is free, so everyone has the opportunity to be part of this event, which Regensburg describes as groundbreaking for the region's cultural landscape.

With the motto “C the Unseen”, Chemnitz wants to draw attention to what is often overlooked in the city and its surroundings. This focus aims to shine a light on the stories, places and people that are off the beaten tourist path. The program opens with a keynote speech by Ulf Kallscheidt, who highlights the key points of the campaign. Afterwards, a round of discussions and an exchange about the future of the Capital of Culture region are planned.

A cultural heritage you can touch

The Chemnitz region and its surroundings can look back on an impressive industrial past. The textile, mechanical engineering, railway and automobile industries contributed significantly to the economic boom. Mining in the Ore Mountains in particular once made the region an economic stronghold, which also explains the traditional handicrafts that are known far beyond the borders of Germany. The Erzgebirge/Krušnohorí mining region has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019, which underlines the historical and cultural tourism appeal of the region. According to reports from Chemnitz 2025, industrialization resulted in enormous wealth, which not only increased people's prosperity, but also promoted art and culture.

The city of Chemnitz itself presents itself with a mixture of industrial culture, Eastern modernity and a wide range of museums, theaters and open spaces for subculture. The event, which officially begins on January 18, 2025, is just the start of a full year of culture that will feature numerous festivals, exhibitions, performances and workshops. The high density of historical castles, which span from different eras to the Baroque period, is another highlight for those interested in culture. The region also offers a wide range of opportunities for hiking and cycling enthusiasts.

Invitation to discovery

The upcoming events in Chemnitz will be designed not only by local actors, but also by national and international artists. The offer aims to create encounters and experiences that bring the history and contemporary culture of the region to life. The renovation of the Hartmann factory, which is intended to function as an international contact point, is one of the central measures to promote cultural exchange and networking.

With all of these activities and initiatives, Chemnitz is becoming a lively stage for art and culture. Anyone who has the chance should mark the events in their calendar and don't miss the exchange during this exciting time. The city has a lot to offer, and curiosity about the undiscovered will be very important in the coming years - a very special experience for everyone who would like to get to know the region and its development better.
