Construction site chaos in summer: train connections between Munich and Mühldorf completely closed!

In Bavaria, especially between Munich and Mühldorf, there is currently a lot of work being done on the tracks. Work has been underway on a second track between Ampfing and Tüßling on the well-known route since 2017. The expansion of “Expansion Route 38” is now entering the next round, as the entire route will be closed for five weeks from August 11, 2023. This is reported by the South German newspaper.

The reason for the temporary closure is necessary work to convert from mechanical to electronic interlocking technology. But that's not all, because in parallel, extensive construction work is also being carried out on other routes, such as between Schwandorf and Regensburg and in the region around Ingolstadt. The route will remain closed for rail and railway technology replacement until August 22, 2023. Track construction work will also force a closure from Regensburg to Ingolstadt from July 3rd to September 2nd, 2023, where, among other things, a new railway bridge is being built in Sinzing.

Commuter transport and rail replacement

A replacement rail service will be set up for commuters, who count up to 15,000 passengers daily on the route from Munich to Mühldorf. Innsalzach24 informs that travelers who have a valid train ticket can use the bus connections to reach their destinations. An express bus between Regensburg and Schwandorf takes around 45 minutes, while the all-stop bus takes around 70 minutes. So far there has been no negative feedback from commuters about the changes. According to the press spokeswoman for the state railway, the rail replacement service is running smoothly.

In addition, passengers on the route from Regensburg to Furth im Wald can even use a direct bus connection to the State Garden Show - practical for those interested in culture. These far-reaching measures, which will take place over the next few weeks, are intended to increase comfort and safety for travelers in the long term and shift more freight traffic to rail. This is done not only by expanding the infrastructure, but also through targeted improvements such as noise and vibration protection and barrier-free access at train stations.

Construction site calendar and further information

The timetable changes and closures are regularly updated and advertised at train stations for all affected travelers. Digital timetables also provide precise information about ongoing changes. A detailed construction site calendar from Deutsche Bahn lists all the smaller interventions that are to be expected in the next few months.

The infrastructure measures will be accompanied by geotechnical investigations between Markt Schwaben and Ampfing until April 2017 in order to obtain a solid cost estimate for the double-track expansion of the section. A long way towards a modern and reliable rail connection in Bavaria! Although the construction work will cause restrictions in the short term, in the long term a noticeable improvement in the connection between the cities is expected.
