Fantastic bathing pleasure: Excellent water quality in the district!
What's good about the Landsberg am Lech district? At the start of the 2025 bathing season, the district health department checked all bathing areas for water quality and provided historical results: All tested bathing waters have excellent water quality. A reason to be happy for bathers who can look forward to refreshing hours by the water. The review is carried out on the basis of the Bavarian Bathing Water Ordinance (BayBadeGewV), with the focus being on bacteriological tests of the water samples. Undesirable contaminants such as tar-containing residues, glass or plastic are also examined. Landkreis Landsberg reports that the regular checks will take place from May 15th to September 15th and that unscheduled tests will also be carried out.
The focus of the complete control is on five EU bathing areas on the western bank of the picturesque Ammersee as well as 13 other bathing areas in the district. All of these sites are tested for water quality every four weeks. The bathing areas include Lech dam 20 near Scheuring and the popular quarry lakes in Prittriching and Geltendorf. A complete list of bathing areas is available online from the district office.
Water quality in Bavaria at a glance
The excellent water quality in Landsberg is also reflected in the overall Bavarian picture. According to the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL), the water quality in Bavarian bathing lakes is mostly good. As of June 2025, a total of 374 bathing areas in Bavaria are designated as EU bathing waters. On average, 92.8% of these bodies of water received the “excellent” designation. It's a good tip to use the LGL online bathing water map to stay informed about current water quality information. LGL Bayern provides all the important data for this.
Water quality monitoring is carried out by health authorities, who regularly take samples from the end of April to September 15th. These tests are critical to identifying potential health risks from pathogens that may enter the water – be they viruses or bacteria from human or animal feces. Responsible behavior by bathers, especially when dealing with garbage and feeding waterfowl, is of great importance in order to continue to maintain water quality at a high level.
Safe bathing fun
Swimming in Bavaria is generally harmless. In recent years, however, it has also been noted that climate change and rising temperatures can bring challenges, such as the increased formation of blue-green algae. In this context, Health Minister Judith Gerlach emphasized that the health of bathers has top priority. StMG ensures that if bacteria levels are too high, appropriate measures are taken to protect bathers.
The average swimmer takes in around 50 milliliters of water when swimming - so it's important to be aware of the potential risks. However, all swimmers can rely on excellent water quality at the bathing areas in Landsberg. Many lakes also offer sanitary facilities, parking spaces and even lifeguards - everything you need for a relaxing day on the water!
