Franconian duels in the DFB Cup: Who will reach for the dream?

It's that time again! The DFB Cup is just around the corner and the first main round draws have put Franconian football fans in high spirits! Things will get exciting in the country from August 15 to 18, 2025, when local legends and emerging talents come together. As inFranken reports, three Franconian teams are in the race: 1. FC Nürnberg, the SpVgg Greuther Fürth and 1. FC Schweinfurt 05.

The Nuremberg team will face FV Illertissen from the Bavarian Regional League in their first game. The distance of around 210 kilometers might not matter much to the team, but the goal is clear: they definitely want to advance to the next round. They didn't manage to do that last season as they were eliminated in the second round - a memory they would like to finally put behind them.

A look at the opponents

But SpVgg Greuther Fürth also has a big challenge ahead of them: BW Lohne from the Regionalliga Nord is on the program. They also missed out on making it to the next round last season after narrowly losing 2-1 to FC 08 Homburg. It remains exciting to see whether things will be better this time.

1. FC Schweinfurt 05 faces Fortuna Düsseldorf, who play in the 2nd Bundesliga. For Schweinfurt it will be the first DFB Cup round in a long time after they were unable to take part last season. This should provide additional motivation for the team to present themselves impressively and unite the fans behind them.

The big picture

The DFB Cup is an opportunity for many clubs to prove themselves and reach a larger audience. The matches in which smaller clubs have to compete against the big names are particularly popular - well-known players like FC Bayern Munich and VfB Stuttgart only enter the tournament on August 26th or 27th. They show that the road to the final of the cup final on May 23, 2026 in Berlin's Olympic Stadium is paved with exciting encounters and the unpredictable football that we all love.

The variety of games is breathtaking. From Dynamo Dresden against FSV Mainz 05 to Borussia Dortmund taking on Rot-Weiss Essen – spectators can look forward to exciting clashes and possibly surprising turns of events. Teams like Arminia Bielefeld and Werder Bremen were able to reach the quarter-finals after regular playing time last season, while others made it with narrow victories or even after extra time, as was the case with Cologne.

When the ball rolls in August, one thing is clear: every squad has the hope of a magical DFB Cup adventure! And for the Franconian teams it is important to defend their own pride and pave the way into the national football pack. Let's get ready for the first encounters!
