Forchheim starts the digital revolution: Bavaria’s first digital twin!

The city of Forchheim is taking a pioneering role in digital transformation by developing a digital twin. This is done in cooperation with RIWA and the RIWA GIS platform, which is the heart of this innovative project. The project is intended not only to make construction planning more efficient, but also to conserve resources and create clarity about municipal processes. An important goal of this initiative is to position Forchheim as a model example of sustainable digital urban development in Bavaria. Wiesentbote reports that the presentation of the digital twin will take place at the upcoming Smart Country Convention 2025 in Berlin.

"The digital twin enables us to visually display and analyze a variety of data. This means that citizens can actively participate in municipal planning processes,"says Matthias Hoffmann, head of the geodata administration department, emphasizing the city's progressiveness. This initiative will continuously improve citizen services and make access to information easier for all citizens, businesses, associations and institutions.

ID and open data

The digital twin follows the motto of “Open Data”, which means that all data is accessible to the public and can be used without restrictions. Of course, data protection is strictly adhered to; Sensitive data is not present in the digital twin. Schools have the opportunity to use this digital twin for educational purposes, promoting digital education in the region. For those interested, contact options are available in the city's digital laboratory.

The initiative in Forchheim is part of the now far-reaching funding program “TwinBy – Digital Twins for Bavaria”, which will end with a final event in Munich on April 11, 2024. The results and progress of 200 participants from 35 Bavarian municipalities are presented here. The Bavarian State Minister for Digital, Dr. Fabian Mehring, speak out and acknowledge the role of the municipalities involved as “front runners” and “future makers”. Since its introduction, TwinBy has developed into an important network for exchange and idea development.

Standards for digital twins

A further step towards digitalization is the publication of DIN SPEC 91607. This standard defines requirements for urban digital twins (UDZ) and aims to support municipalities in solving local challenges such as climate change or demographics. According to DIN, around 100 municipal usage scenarios have been identified that enable networked, sustainable urban development. The digital twin is not just a technical innovation, but a tool for helping to shape our urban living spaces.

Overall, the development of the digital twin in Forchheim shows how modern technology and citizen participation can go hand in hand to create a livable and sustainable city.
