Bicycle accident in Erding: cyclist injured, safety questions pressing!
Today, June 15, 2025, an accident occurred in Erding, more precisely on Siglfinger Straße, which once again raises awareness of the dangerous challenges in road traffic for cyclists. At around 2:30 p.m., a 26-year-old car driver from Erding collided with a 25-year-old cyclist from Munich. The driver who enters the roundabout in her Ford Transit overlooks the cyclist who is already in the roundabout. Despite her braking and an attempt to evade, there was a minor collision that brought the cyclist to the ground.
Fortunately, the injuries the 25-year-old sustained in this fall are only minor. She suffered a wound on her chin and abrasions on her hands and arms and was taken to Erding Hospital for treatment. However, there was slight paint damage to the bike, while the possibility of damage to the carbon fiber frame still needs to be checked. The material damage could range from several hundred to around three thousand euros. Good to know: No damage was found on the vehicle that caused the accident, which at least makes the situation a little easier for her.
A risk for cyclists
As the daily news According to reports, accidents among cyclists are increasing, often without anyone else being involved. There is an increase, especially in the winter months, which is due to both weather conditions and the often inadequate infrastructure. In 2023, around 27,400 cycling accidents without other road users were recorded, revealing worrying statistics.
A third of fatal bicycle accidents last year occurred without the involvement of other road users, and almost half of all bicycle accidents with serious injuries were solo accidents. When collisions with cars occurred, the numbers were even more dramatic: 5,112 seriously injured and 178 deaths are a clear warning. Insurers' accident research (UDV) shows that serious bicycle accidents are often exacerbated by inadequate safety measures and a lack of separation between bicycle and car traffic, especially on country roads.
Safe roads for cyclists
The UDV has found in a comprehensive study that an average of four cyclists die and 58 are seriously injured on German country roads every week. A majority of these tragic incidents occur at intersections, where cars are often allowed to drive at speeds over 70 km/h. The dangerous edges and unsecured crossings pose a high risk for cyclists. The UDV calls for an improvement in the infrastructure to better protect cyclists.
The increase in serious accidents, particularly on country roads, has increased by almost 30 percent in the last ten years. At every second accident intersection there are problems with visibility and safe crossing, especially when cyclists on the right are overlooked by road users. This makes it clear that not only cyclists but also drivers should pay more attention to each other in order to counteract the increasing number of accidents.
At a time when cycling is becoming increasingly popular for many, it is time not only to increase the safety of cyclists, but also to focus on effective measures to prevent accidents. Ultimately, safe traffic is good business for everyone.
