Cycling climate in the Ebersberg district: Poing on the road to success!

The ADFC bicycle climate test 2024 revealed a mixed assessment of bicycle friendliness for the Ebersberg district. Over 213,000 people in Germany took part in the survey, which took place from September to November 2024. In Ebersberg, five municipalities have provided enough assessments to paint a convincing picture of cycling conditions. The most important criteria included infrastructure, security, comfort and political support, as Merkur reports.

The results show that Poing takes the best place with a grade of 3.3. The ratings for accessibility to the town center (1.8), quick cycling (2.2) and the rental bike system (2.3) are particularly positive. In comparison, Vaterstetten achieved a grade of 3.8 (143 out of 429) and received honorable mention for accessibility (2.0) and quick driving (2.3). However, there is also criticism of the construction site management (4.5) and the bike rental (5.4).

Infrastructure weaknesses

The city of Ebersberg follows with a grade of 4.0 (285 out of 423), although the ratings for winter service and cycle path cleaning (both 3.2) shed some light on the matter. But there are downsides here too: the width of the cycle paths (4.8) and the feeling of safety (4.6) are poor. Kirchseeon, with a grade of 4.3 (383 out of 423), also has problems, particularly with the traffic lights (4.9) and the width of the cycle paths (4.9). Markt Schwaben, with a grade of 4.4 (390 out of 423), rated the feeling of safety as 5.0 and the construction site management as unsatisfactory as 5.1, but received positive feedback for cycling for young and old (3.1).

The ADFC is now calling for more political courage and targeted investments in safe infrastructure in order to sustainably improve cycling mobility in the district. The survey results are not just a snapshot, but also offer valuable feedback that is of great importance for transport planners and political leaders, as is the information on the [ADFC] website (https://fahrradklima-test.adfc.de/).

A look beyond national borders

A comparison across Germany shows that the climate for cyclists has improved slightly. The overall grade of the ADFC bicycle climate test 2024 was 3.92, a small increase compared to previous years. While some large cities such as Frankfurt am Main and Hanover achieved considerable improvements, the verdict on Berlin was rather sobering due to a lack of commitment. One of the largest surveys on the cycling climate worldwide has also set a clear direction: good transport concepts and increased use of electric bicycles could have a significant influence on the future of cycle mobility, as ADFC emphasizes.

The results of the test and an interactive map can be found on the ADFC website, where further information and analysis is provided to improve cycling infrastructure. This could help municipalities plan targeted improvements and thus sustainably promote cycling in the region.
