Construction work for a cycle path in Ebersberg: securing safety and the future!
On November 17, 2025, construction work on a new 3.5-kilometer-long cycle path and sidewalk will begin in the Ebersberg district. This important connection extends between Schwaberwegen in the municipality of Forstinning and the entrance to Anzing along the EBE 05. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Friday and marks the beginning of a project that is not only intended to improve safety, but also to better develop the districts of Niederried, Heilig Kreuz and Unterasbach.
The investment framework for this measure is around three million euros, with the federal government covering around two thirds of the costs. During the construction work, half of the district road will be closed; A full closure is planned to complete the measures. The new cycle path is scheduled to be completed in summer 2026. This initiative could be crucial to counteract the stagnating share of cycling in Germany, which currently stands at 11%, as the ADFC reports.
Share of cycling traffic in Germany
A current survey on “Mobility in Germany 2023”, published on March 25, 2025, shows a worrying development: the share of cycling in rural areas has fallen from 7% to 6%. This not only poses a challenge for the creation of safe cycle paths, but also jeopardizes the goals of the National Cycling Plan. Dr. Caroline Lodemann, Federal Managing Director of the ADFC, is therefore urgently calling for more investment in cycle path infrastructure.
Although positive developments are being recorded in federal states such as Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg and Baden-Württemberg, the situation in North Rhine-Westphalia and other regions is not very encouraging. Dissatisfaction with cycling infrastructure is growing, which underlines the need for a well-thought-out plan for a Germany-wide cycling network.
Investments are necessary
The construction work in the Ebersberg district is a step in the right direction. The individual measures are intended not only to increase safety, but also comfort for cyclists and pedestrians. This could help to positively influence the average cycle distance, which has increased from 3.8 to 4.3 kilometers. Finally, federal political efforts to reach a federal-state agreement to promote cycling are in the starting blocks.
We will be curious to see how the project in Ebersberg will develop and whether it will be an example for other regions where cycling promotion still needs to catch up. A good hand in implementation could help the region achieve its own mobility goals and get more people on bikes.
