Urgent boiling order! Coliform germs discovered in Dachau drinking water

There is currently reason for concern in Dachau: coliform germs were detected during a routine drinking water test on Münchner Straße. The municipal utilities are therefore calling on all citizens in the supply area to boil the water before using it. This measure applies to the entire city of Dachau as well as the districts of Obergrashof, Webling, Steinkirchen and the communities of Bergkirchen and Karlsfeld. The boiling water requirement is expected to remain in place until at least Monday Süddeutsche.de reported.

The initial study results indicate that the germ contamination is locally limited, particularly in the region around Münchner Straße. In order to clarify the situation, intensive investigations are underway at 26 measuring points throughout the network area. In addition, a fire hydrant at Unterer Markt was replaced as a precaution, but the connection to the contamination is still unclear. On Sunday, the municipal utilities thoroughly flushed the drinking water pipes and hydrants on Münchner Straße to determine the causes of the contamination.

Helpful information for the public

The health aspects are particularly crucial in a boiling requirement. The municipal utilities emphasize that the water must be boiled before use in the following areas:

  • Trinken von Leitungswasser
  • Zubereitung von Speisen und Getränken
  • Waschen von Obst, Gemüse und Salat
  • Zähneputzen
  • Reinigung offener Wunden

To be on the safe side, the water should be brought to a rolling boil once and then cooled for at least ten minutes. The use of a kettle is recommended.

However, the all-clear is given for other applications: water can still be used safely for personal hygiene, for showering and bathing, as well as for cleaning clothes and dishes. The toilet flushing is also not affected. Dachau.de adds that regular information about the status of the investigations and the duration of the boiling water requirement will be provided via the website and local media.

Remembering previous incidents

This situation is not the first incident of its kind in the region. A similar case involving coliform bacteria occurred in Karlsfeld in 2007, when the cause of the contamination could not be clearly clarified at the time. Experts point this out, coliform bacteria often indicate contamination that can be caused by various environmental factors.

Since the health of the citizens is the top priority, there is speculation that the situation will be clarified quickly. Citizens are asked to follow the instructions of the municipal utilities and to regularly inform themselves about possible changes to the situation.
