New forensic laboratory in Bamberg: 5.6 million for more security!
On June 16, 2025, a new forensic laboratory was opened in Bamberg, an important step towards strengthening internal security in Bavaria. Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann handed over the modern laboratory to the criminal investigation department, thereby emphasizing the need for continuous investment in infrastructural projects in order to meet the constantly changing requirements of forensic science. A total of 5.6 million euros was invested in the construction in order to improve the quality of forensics and analysis, as reported by stmi.bayern.de.
The new laboratory building, which offers over 160 square meters for forensic examinations, was carefully planned. The project's groundbreaking ceremony took place in September 2022, and after 33 months of construction, high-performance facilities are now available that can meet the demands of modern crime. The old laboratory was replaced by office space in order to make optimal use of the space.
Modern infrastructure for forensic science
The new premises include a large basic laboratory and two specialized examination laboratories with separate drying rooms. In addition, evidence and documentation rooms are part of the extension. The direct connection to the main building via a connecting bridge ensures short official routes and efficient processes. Herrmann also emphasized the growing importance of forensic science for criminal prosecution, which is also reflected in the quality of the reports to be processed.
The BKA's Criminal Engineering Institute (KTI) is the central element in securing and investigating forensic evidence. It employs highly qualified employees who work together in an interdisciplinary manner to implement state-of-the-art technologies in investigative work. This is the only way to counter the constantly new forms of crime that result directly from advancing technological development.
Insights into forensic research
The KTI is not only an important contact point for all security authorities, but also for the forensic training of experts, police managers, judges and prosecutors. Every year it prepares a five-digit number of investigation applications and produces court-admissible reports that are crucial for solving crimes. The quality of the work is ensured by using internationally recognized standards such as DIN ISO 17020 and DIN ISO 17025, which increases the trustworthiness of the results.
With over 50 different forensic science collections and a constant exchange within the European Network of Forensic Science Institutes (ENFSI), the institute always stays up to date with the latest forensic technology. As part of the ENFSI, knowledge and innovations in the field of forensic technology are shared across Europe, which is of immense importance for the entire security architecture in Europe.
The new laboratory in Bamberg not only sets an important example for security architecture, but also makes an effective contribution to fighting crime and protecting citizens. Investing in the forensic infrastructure is therefore not only timely, but also a necessary step into the future of criminal investigations in Bavaria.
