Bamberg celebrates: Bürgerhaus Obere Brücke 10 will soon shine new!

Obere Brücke 10, 96049 Bamberg, Deutschland - Bamberg relies on the preservation of historical architecture: On July 8, 2025, the facade renovation will be ceremoniously handed over in the Bürgerhaus Obere Brücke. On this day, a funding contract is presented by the German Foundation for Monument Protection (DSD) worth 35,000 euros. This is an occasion that is of particular importance not only for the city, but also for the monument conservation community. Among other things, Herbert van Beek from the DSD, Jörg Urban von Lotto Bayern and the monument owner Dr. Be Anna-Franziska von Schweinitz. The DSD has also celebrated its 40th anniversary this year and has promoted more than 640 objects in Bavaria through donations and lottery yields, so Denkmalschutz.de.

The Bürgerhaus Obere Brücke 10 has a long and eventful story. The oldest part of the building can be dated back until about 1400. It was first mentioned in 1484. In the 16th century, it served tanners and leather traders before they experienced severe destruction by fires and the Thirty Years' War. In 1690 the famous master builder Leonhard Dietzenhofer bought the property and lived there until his death in 1707. Dietzenhofer, who is considered one of the most important architects of his time, was known for his magnificent buildings in Bamberg and the surrounding area, including the monastery church of St. Michael, as Wikipedia describes.

a master builder with history

Leonhard Dienstzenhofer was born on February 20, 1660 in St. Margarethen and was a formative part of Bavarian architectural history until his death. At the age of 20 he worked as a polisher in the monastery building in Waldsassen before moving to Bamberg in 1687. It is believed that he continued to study the architect Abraham Leuthner's works, which had a strong impact on his development. Under Prince -Bishop Lothar Franz von Schönborn became a Hofbauister and shaped the city with its buildings for many years.

Dienstzenhofer was not only a talented master builder, but also a family man. He had two marriages and a total of seven children. His life path led him to recognition from the hard school of building as one of the best architects of his time. After his death, he left a significant legacy that is still visible today. The conversion of the community center around 1700 shows Dienstzenhofer's influence and craftsmanship in detail.

New life for a historical building

The community center itself, a three -story building with a gable roof, has changed over the centuries. The conversion of the ground floor around 1730 by Johann Friedrich Rosenzweig is only one of the many facets in its history. A restaurant was housed in the house until 1980 and even today the building shines with its charm of past times. The late Gothic chapel inside, which goes back to the year 1400, is particularly remarkable.

The funding contract for facade renovation represents a further step in receiving the community center for the next generations. The city of Bamberg shows that it has a good knack for the preservation of its historical treasures so that they will remain part of the cultural heritage in the future.
