Experience climate change up close: events in Augsburg in July!

There's really something going on in Augsburg in July! Several events are starting under the motto “Climate Change and Urban Greenness” that invite all interested citizens to actively address the challenges of climate change. As augsburg.de reports, these events are not just about a look into the future, but about concrete measures that should put Augsburg on the path to becoming a climate-resilient city.

It starts on July 4th with a varied walk organized by the Augsburg Environmental Station. From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. the tour starts near the cathedral and leads through the city center to the lower old town. The topics of urban climate and possible adaptation measures such as green facades and climate-resilient city trees are on the agenda here. Registration is required via the Augsburg Adult Education Center (course number YF11679).

Bike tour and summer days in the neighborhood

For cycling enthusiasts, there is an exciting bike tour on July 5th from 3 to 5:30 p.m. that starts at the water playground in Sheridan Park. This tour along the Wertach takes participants directly to the town hall square and highlights the effects of climate change on water as well as options for drinking water supply and heavy rain prevention. You'll also need your own bike here, although people under 18 should definitely have a supervisor with them. Here too, registration via the adult education center is required (course number YF11680).

But that's not all! From July 5th to August 2nd, Sommerstrasse invites you to the climate-resilient district on Mittelstrasse in Oberhausen. Here you can look forward to relaxation, encounters, games and sport. The whole thing starts on July 5th with a neighborhood festival from 3 p.m. Workshops and live music round off the offering, all organized by the Rechts der Wertach district management.

Health and climate resilient measures

Finally, on July 10th everything revolves around the topic of “climate change and health”. From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Prof. Elke Hertig from the University of Augsburg will provide information about the health effects of climate change and important heat protection measures for buildings in the Environmental Education Center. A curatorial discussion as part of the exhibition “Heat Emergency Call Augsburg” starts at 5 p.m. and no registration is necessary.

But what is behind Augsburg's efforts to create climate-friendly infrastructure? An important step is the SMSA project, which the city launched with an investment of around 9.5 million euros. As machmit.augsburg.de explains, the project consists of four sub-projects that serve to combat the consequences of climate change. This includes smart watering management, the redesign of green spaces, tree planting in the city center and the creation of climate oases.

The goals are clear: Augsburg wants to achieve a better CO2 balance, improve the local climate, strengthen the water balance and create new recreation areas. There are also plans to optimize health care for citizens and reduce the consumption of water and fuel when watering the city's greenery. The whole thing is supported by the Smart City office, which has been active since the beginning of 2022.

Given advancing urbanization and forecasts that 68% of the world's population will live in cities by 2050, it is even more important that cities like Augsburg act sustainably. Climate change brings with it challenges that influence both the urban climate and the quality of life of the residents, as gelsenwasser-blog.de notes. The development of environmentally friendly infrastructure is an essential part of shaping the urban future.
