Lindau Christmas tree: 35 years old and now the heart of the city!
Preparations for the festive season are becoming more and more concrete in Lindau. On November 18th, a very special Christmas tree will be set up on Bismarckplatz in front of the Old Town Hall: a 15-meter-high Nordmann fir that not only weighs an impressive 800 kilograms, but also looks back on a moving history. It comes from the garden of Immanuel and Anneliese Schobloch in Lindau-Aeschach, who planted the tree themselves 35 years ago when it was just 70 centimeters tall. The Schoblochs remember well that they transported the soil for the seedling in their new VW bus. These memories are now part of the tradition that many residents associate with the Christmas tree.
The decision to cut down the tree was anything but easy for the Schoblochs. They valued the tree very much and considered it healthy and beautiful. However, they were forced to take this measure due to storms and extreme weather events that could pose a threat to the tree in the future. The idea of donating the tree as a Christmas tree came from the neighborhood, which shows how strong the sense of community is in Lindau.
A spark of tradition
The custom of putting up Christmas trees during Advent is deeply rooted in German culture. The Christmas tree, also known as the Christmas tree, became popular worldwide in the 19th century from German-speaking countries. Over the centuries, various customs and decorations have developed that make the evergreen tree a symbol of vitality and eternal life. This tradition is not only lived in Germany, but has also found its way to Austria and the USA.
In Germany, around 25 million people put up a Christmas tree every year. The Nordmann fir, which also provides the festive splendor in Lindau, has a market share of around 80 percent. Fairy lights, candles and Christmas tree baubles are particularly popular, making the trees shine and warming countless hearts. The history of the first decorated Christmas trees also goes back to the 19th century, when putting up these trees became an expression of social status and thus a sign of communal celebration.
A community project
The city of Lindau examined the tree and was quickly convinced to use it as the centerpiece of this year's Christmas market. The Lindau gardening and civil engineering companies (GTL) take over the felling work and the transport of the tree. This shows that tradition and community go hand in hand in Lindau. The anticipation for the opening of the Christmas market is growing not only among the Schoblochs, but throughout the city. A festively decorated tree is more than just an eye-catcher; it symbolizes the light in the darkness and the hope that comes with the Christmas season.
As the date approaches, people can look forward to the festive magic that this 35-year-old tree will spread at Bismarckplatz in Lindau. It is a sign of togetherness and remembrance – not just for the Schoblochs, but for everyone who enjoys these festive traditions.
