Play street for children in Gunzenhausen: A day full of fun!
An exciting event for all little adventurers is planned in Gunzenhausen on July 18, 2025. From 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Birkenweg between Breslauer Straße and Von-der-Borch-Straße will become a temporary play street. As previously reported, vehicle traffic will be closed during the event to provide a safe space for children to play. This initiative advocates for children's right to leisure, play and cultural participation, as set out in Article 31 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Middle Franconian District Youth Association coordinates the project, while the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen District Youth Association acts as a local organizer, supported by the Evangelical Youth in the Gunzenhausen Deanery and the city of Gunzenhausen.
But what does it mean to witness such events? A simple but impressive concept: children are allowed to bring their own toys, be it chalk, balls or scooters, and enjoy a hands-on program and free play opportunities. Participation in this event is free of charge and does not require registration. And the best thing about it: a barrier-free and accessible range of games is provided here, so that every child who lives in Gunzenhausen and the surrounding area has the opportunity to become part of this special afternoon.
Right to play and cultural participation
The right of children to leisure and play is not just a nice idea, but a clearly defined right in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Loud Convention on the Rights of the Child.info Every child has the right to rest, free time and age-appropriate leisure activities. Article 31(1) refers explicitly to the freedom to participate in cultural and artistic life, and Article 31(2) requires all States Parties to provide appropriate opportunities for this. Parents also have a responsibility to give their children this freedom.
In Germany, the implementation of these rights is predominantly carried out by the parental home, while state-supported measures ensure that children have the necessary opportunities for recreation and leisure activities, as regulated by Section 11 Paragraph 3 SGB VIII of the German child and youth welfare system.
Of the two planned temporary play streets that will be set up in the district this year, Gunzenhausen is lucky enough to be one of the first. This shows the growing importance of tools for child development through play and social interaction, which are beautifully promoted through such events.
Children have the right to a carefree time, and this initiative not only offers the little ones a place to play, but also a platform to develop their creativity. A successful afternoon is guaranteed here, and you can already feel the anticipation!
