Fathers in focus: traveling exhibition Dad can do it” in Weiden!
An exciting traveling exhibition will open in Weiden in der Oberpfalz on Monday, December 1, 2025, which deals with a topic that affects many families: the role of fathers in today's society. Under the title “Dad will do it”, the exhibition will be on view from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Weiden-Neustadt adult education center, Luitpoldstraße 249. This event is part of the “Dad & Me – a Super Team” series, which was launched by the Alliance for Family. As weiden.de reports, the exhibition includes a total of 18 posters that deal with the topics of fatherhood, parental leave and the compatibility of private and professional life.
With this exhibition, the organizers want to promote the recognition and appreciation of fathers. The aim is to improve the framework conditions for committed fatherhood in family, work and society. This is important at a time when balancing work and family life is a major challenge for many parents.
Fathers at work: A serious challenge
According to current data, there are around 7.2 million mothers and 6.2 million fathers of working age (15-64 years) in Germany with at least one child under the age of 15 in the household. An interesting observation was that 68% of mothers and 92% of fathers were employed in 2023 without being on parental leave or maternity leave during this time. The employment rate of mothers varies greatly, depending on the age of the youngest child, as bpb.de analyzes: Only 40% of mothers who have children under 3 years of age work, while this proportion is the same for mothers of 10-14 year olds 84% rises.
For fathers, however, labor force participation remains consistently high, regardless of the age of the children. This shows that fathers are generally more likely to work full time - 92% of husbands and 90% of partners are employed. These statistics make it clear that the challenges of balancing family and work are often unevenly distributed.
Differences between regions
In addition, there are differences in the labor market participation of mothers in Germany, depending on the geographical location. Mothers in East Germany tend to be employed more often than their West German counterparts. This has, among other things, to do with different care situations. While 48% of mothers in the East work with small children, the figure is only 38% in the West. This divergence is not only important for individual careers, but also influences the financial situation and thus the possibilities for family life.
The traveling exhibition “Dad will do it” is intended not only to provide information, but also to initiate a dialogue and strengthen the perception of the father's role in society. Admission to the event is free, which opens up the opportunity to talk to many others and exchange experiences. So if you have the time, you shouldn't miss the opportunity and maybe gain a new perspective on being a father.
