Garbage collection in danger: hedges and illegal parking block roads!

In the Lower Allgäu, garbage trucks have recently faced a number of challenges. Narrow streets, overhanging plants and recklessly parked vehicles make it difficult for drivers to follow their routes reliably. This means that some garbage cans cannot be emptied, which of course causes frustration for residents. The district's waste management department has therefore made a clear recommendation: hedges should be trimmed regularly and parking behavior must be reconsidered. It is important that intersections, junctions and turning loops in particular remain clear at all times so that garbage trucks can get through without having problems.

The management emphasizes that plants must not protrude into the traffic area and that a height of at least 4.50 meters should be kept clear of roadways. This measure is of great importance not only for garbage collection, but also for emergency services. Anyone who ensures that the roads remain usable is acting in the interests of the community.

Sense for nature: regulations for hedge trimming

But it's not just the practical aspect that's important - protecting the local wildlife also plays a significant role. Many animals find hedges and trees an ideal habitat, especially during the breeding season from March 1st to September 30th. During this period, heavy pruning or felling of trees is not permitted according to the Federal Nature Conservation Act. Nevertheless, careful shaping and care cuts are permitted to ensure safety in traffic. “A proper procedure is required,” say the NABU experts. They advise avoiding pruning until well into the summer in order not to endanger the threatened bird species.

Before each cut, it is important to check whether there are nests in the hedges. It is not only a question of conscience, but also legally stipulated that breeding and resting places of wild animals are protected, as set out in Section 44 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act. Such regulations are particularly important in gardens and public green spaces.

Designing living spaces: More than just care

A well-designed garden can not only increase road safety, but also create habitats for many animals. NABU recommends setting up Benje hedges that contain dead wood and brushwood and provide shelter for various animal species. These structures create space not only for birds, but also for common toads, slowworms and hedgehogs, which often raise their young during the summer months. Anyone who maintains a garden can do much more than just keep their own property beautiful - they can actively contribute to biodiversity and the protection of nature.

In conclusion, treating nature responsibly is a task that affects us all. We can easily make a big difference by paying attention to the vegetation around our buildings while complying with legal requirements. So nothing stands in the way of effective garbage disposal and thriving wildlife.
