Celebratory anniversary: 70 years of love for animals at the Traunstein animal shelter!
On November 8th, 2025, the Traunstein animal shelter in the Trenkmoos district celebrated a very special occasion: 70 years of love for animals. The open day attracted several hundred visitors who not only took the opportunity to get to know the animals, but also to gain an insight into the valuable work of the animal shelter. Chairwoman Inga Böhm-Reithmeier expressed her thanks to the employees and volunteers who are committed to the welfare of the animals.
Mayor Michael Wimmer and Lord Mayor Dr. Christian Hümmer insisted on handing over a donation check for 500 euros to celebrate the day. Wimmer highlighted the shelter's importance to the community, while Hümmer praised the team for 70 years of animal welfare. Such generous support further strengthens and promotes the valuable work of the animal shelter.
Current challenges in animal protection
As animal shelter manager Anna Obermeier reported, the current admission numbers in the animal shelter are considerable: 21 dogs, 60 cats, 10 birds, 30 rodents and several reptiles, including a turtle and a snake, are currently accommodated. It is noticeable that more and more animals are finding refuge in animal shelters after official confiscations. This situation in particular illustrates how important the work of the animal shelter is today.
Obermeier expressed his wish for more dog walkers and would be happy to receive donations in kind and money. She also appealed to consumers to report stray cats in order to enable them to be neutered and thus control the population.
A colorful supporting program
The open day also offered a great supporting program that provided entertainment. Visitors were able to enjoy music, enjoy delicious coffee and cake and browse through various stalls. There was an opportunity for face painting for the younger guests, which was particularly well received. The local Surberg fire department also supported the animal shelter with traffic and parking services, which made the event a success.
Animal rehoming and modern animal welfare practices
If you are looking for a new pet, the Traunstein animal shelter has come to the right place. In this context, for example, the Malinois male Drago was introduced. Drago, born in April 2022, has been in a foster home in Upper Bavaria since March 2024. This intelligent dog has already made progress in dealing with his environment, but still needs training. Drago is cuddly with his people and has already shown many positive characteristics, but is skeptical of strangers. The animal shelter actively deals with such aspects of animal placement and ensures that the animals end up in the right hands, as can also be seen in the discussions about the reputable animal protection organizations in Germany.
The Traunstein animal shelter is not only a place of hope for the animals, but also an important part of the community. The great response to the anniversary shows that animal protection is anchored in the hearts of many people. Those responsible are more than satisfied with how the day went and the keen interest of the citizens who came to find out more about the work and the animals.
