Dexter cattle in Tirschenreuth: Natural care for meadows!

In Tirschenreuth, the Dexter cattle Motschi and Urmel have recently been working to look after a meadow in the “An der Wiege” area. This meadow is simply too wet for machines and therefore represents a real challenge. The aim of the project is to protect around 5,000 m² of areas from bush cover by autumn. So far, the meadow has been regularly mown by the landscape conservation association, but the two Dexter cattle, which are just two years old, offer a sustainable and ecologically sensible solution for maintenance, as the Oberpfalz Echo reports.

The two cattle are not only nimble helpers when it comes to landscape maintenance, but also real eye-catchers. An on-site appointment with Mayor Franz Stahl as well as representatives of the landscape conservation association and other experts made the advantages of this project clear. Motschi and Urmel were completely unimpressed by the visit and continued their work tirelessly.

Similar encouraging successes can also be recorded in other parts of Germany. In Lenglern, a small community in Lower Saxony, seven Dexter cattle have taken on the task of maintaining the landscape on the Kramberg under the direction of 21-year-old young farmer Emil Kratzat. These cattle, including the friendly names Annabelle, Emma and Balu, were purchased there specifically for open land maintenance and help to manage a 5 ½ hectare landscape protection area. According to the HNA, their efforts ensure that bush encroachment is prevented and biodiversity is promoted.

The small and frugal Dexter cattle are ideal for such projects as they protect the turf and sensitive areas. Part of the area with orchids and rare herbs is only released for grazing in August. Emil Kratzat takes great care of the animals and ensures that they are always supplied with fresh water.

Popularity and benefits of Dexter cattle

The demand for Dexter cattle is also growing in the Rosenheim area. The Tischner family has had the small cattle on their farm in Samerberg for three years. Their need goes beyond just meat production - Dexter cattle are true landscape stewards, helping to eat woody rash and old litter that is not used by traditional grazing cattle. The meat from these cattle is considered lean and tasty and the trend towards organic meat has recently skyrocketed, as OVB Online reports.

The Tischners offer their customers the opportunity to order the meat in the desired quantity and use the entire animal, including offal, leather and skins. Grazing by Dexter cattle also leads to species- and flower-rich areas that have a high proportion of Red List species. This shows how valuable and practical cooperation between farmers and nature conservation organizations is.

In summary, Dexter cattle not only help maintain meadows and landscapes, but also serve as an excellent source of high quality, sustainably produced food. Be it in Tirschenreuth, Lenglern or Rosenheim – the little cattle are useful everywhere!
