Carbon monoxide drama in Straubing: 13 guests in the hospital after a barbecue!

On Friday evening there was a worrying incident in Straubing during a barbecue at the local building yard. A 67-year-old who was responsible for the barbecue is the focus of police investigations for negligent bodily harm. A dangerous amount of carbon monoxide (CO) had accumulated in the vehicle hall that was used for the celebration with around 50 participants because there was insufficient ventilation. This was reported by the South German newspaper.

Unfortunately, the evening was not without consequences. Two guests, a 68-year-old and an 85-year-old, had to be hospitalized for carbon monoxide poisoning. The condition of the 85-year-old, who lost consciousness while his 68-year-old companion complained of symptoms of poisoning, was particularly dramatic. A total of 13 people had to be taken to hospital for examination as the dangerous CO levels affected the well-being of many guests BR24 reported.

Creeping poison

Carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that is produced when fuels such as wood or coal burn incompletely. High concentrations can be life-threatening in a very short time. Even the smallest amounts can cause unconsciousness and, in the worst case, pose a suffocation hazard. CO detectors should therefore be installed in every household where such fuels are used in order to warn in good time about this insidious poison.

The police in charge are now continuing to investigate and checking whether others responsible for the barbecue and the inadequate ventilation in the hall must be held accountable. “Further information on the background is not yet known,” says the official statements. The investigation will show whether there was gross negligence here, they said South German newspaper.

Against this background, barbecue parties should not only be sociable, but also safe. Good ventilation and reading CO levels are essential to avoid such dangerous situations. Even at a cozy get-together, a watchful eye on safety is required.
