Augsburg Panthers reach final after thrilling penalty thriller!

In an exciting game, the Augsburg Panthers won their first preparatory game for the 2025/26 season against the Straubing Tigers 3-2 after a penalty shootout. A hero of the game was Canadian Alexandre Grenier, who not only scored the late equalizer but also converted the decisive penalty. This comeback took place as part of the Straubinger Gäubodenfest, which has been running for a week and culminates at the weekend with the Gäuboden Cup.

In a thrilling duel on the ice, Fabrizio Pilu gave the Augsburg Panthers the lead in the tenth minute. But the Straubingers didn't have to wait long: Zac Leslie equalized in the 21st minute and Skyler McKenzie even put Augsburg behind in the 32nd minute. The Panthers struggled in the second third and had problems on offense - a situation that led AEV coach Bill Peters to remove goalie Garteig for an additional field player.

The decisive moment

In the final phase of regular time, Alexandre Grenier proved his skills: with his equalizer in the 60th minute, he turned things around and brought Augsburg back into the game. In the penalty shootout that followed, goalie Michael Garteig parried all three of Straubing's attempts, thus securing the victory for the Panthers.

The Augsburg team will compete in the final of the Gäuboden Cup on Sunday at 12 p.m. against the Nürnberg Ice Tigers, who previously won 4-3 against ERC Ingolstadt. AEV captain Cody Kunyk and his deputies Max Renner and Tim Wohlgemuth lead the team onto the ice. It is important to mention that some players are missing from the squad due to stress, including Moritz Wirth and Liron Pellizzari.

The Panthers are already showing promising signs in this early phase of preparation, even if the road is still long. It will be exciting to see how they do in the final. The anticipation for the coming season is growing, and with a strong team spirit Augsburg could play a good role again.
