Starnberg city council is planning drastic changes at the Seebahnhof!
Starnberg, Deutschland - In Starnberg, there is a lot going on around the Seebahnhof, which is considered one of the most beautiful train stations in Germany. The city council is seriously considering deleting it from the timetable in order to relieve the traffic situation in the area. The density of cars, buses, cyclists and pedestrians is high here. Iris Ziebart from the association "Schöne Zum See" emphasizes that relief is urgently needed. However, the discussions are heated, because critics warn that the deletion of the stopping point could rather heat car traffic. According to FOCUS There are two options for debate: Leave the Seebahnhof in the future or only regional trains would no longer hold. In any case, the trains would only stop at Starnberg Nord station, which is about 1.5 kilometers from the lake. For comparison, the current distance to the water is only ten meters.
Deutsche Bahn has plans to complete the connection of the train station by the end of 2025 and plan to implement it for 2026. Mayor Patrick Janik emphasizes that without the decision to redesign the station, only technical renovations on tracks and overhead lines will be made. Various variants for future connection were discussed in the last city council meetings. The variant "Lake Connection 2.0" is not followed up due to a vote with 19: 9 votes. An application to disclose the negotiation content between the city and the railway was also rejected, which limits transparency in the discussion. Instead, the variant "7E", which provides for a station conversion and a turning track on the Oberfeld, will be followed.
Current developments and views
In the past two years there have been intensive negotiations between the city of Starnberg and Deutsche Bahn. Appearance could be reached on December 12, 2022 when the city council agreed to the draft contract with an overwhelming majority. The notarial certification followed on December 22, 2022. The goal is to modernize the rail facilities at three locations and urban design, which should also make a better connection to the lake. The Starnberg train station will hand in one of its four tracks, while the regional trains will keep north at the North Railway station in the future
the weather and pedestrian traffic should be taken into account by these measures. Nevertheless, the city pulled the right of withdrawal from this contract in March 2024 because there was no fixed financing commitments, and this led to renewed negotiations with the DB. At the same time, options for financing the renovation projects are probed. Particularly noteworthy is the lake connection advisory board, which consists of four citizens and the first mayor and is supposed to support the whole thing with ideas and assistance.
The first meeting of this advisory board took place on January 30, 2025. It remains to be seen as the extensive planning continues, because the next step is a "round table to the Starnberger Seebahnhof", which was scheduled for June 4. Here it will be shown which decisions will ultimately be made in order to improve the traffic situation sustainably and to ensure that the wonderful view of Lake Starnberg is not installed by cars and hissing buses. You can stay excited, because the development is only the beginning of a great rethink in the traffic infrastructure around Lake Starnberg.
