Schweinfurt receives red card: Heat alarm for the city!

Schweinfurt, a city with over 50,000 inhabitants, has poorly cut off at the current heat check of the German Environmental Aid (DUH) and receives the dreaded "red card". According to a comprehensive examination, in which a total of 190 cities in Germany were analyzed on their heat resistance, Schweinfurt is located in the upper third of the most affected cities. With an average surface temperature of 36.1 degrees in summer, the city is affected by heat above average.

The analysis shows that about 54.9 % of the city area are sealed. The green areas that play an important role in climate protection in Schweinfurt with only around 3.2 % of the city area are extremely low. The DUH raises the alarm and describes the results as the "alarm signal". Over 12 million people in German cities are now exposed to extreme heat load, which underlines the need for measures to improve urban climate conditions. Schweinfurt does not cut off better here either - on the contrary, the city is exemplary for the problem of missing green equipment in urban rooms.

In order to meet the heat stress, the DUH demands minimum green parts on land, buildings and in public space. This not only includes the preservation of existing green areas and trees, but also innovative approaches such as the greening of schoolyards. These suggestions should contribute to improving air quality and increasing the quality of stay in the city.

The problem of area sealing is not only present in Schweinfurt. Many German cities fight with the same challenges. According to the Tagesschau Cuts, cities like Ludwigshafen, Heilbronn, Regensburg and Ludwigsburg. These cities have already started to actively take countermeasures, such as the redesign of sealed areas into green oases.

With the aim of reducing the heat -touched conditions in cities, the DUH plans to enforce legally binding goals to terminate the area sealing by 2035. The initiative to create more consciously handling green areas and surface sealing could be the key to a more climate -based city. The heat check clearly shows that there is scope for action and urgently needs to be exhausted.

The results from the investigations presented should persuade the city administration to develop effective concepts that counteract the increasing heat. Because one thing is clear: if Schweinfurt does not want to act, the "red card" becomes a season ticket.
