Kolbermoor: Citizens' dialogue on the bicycle route - enthusiasm or resistance?

In Kolbermoor, the dream of a new bicycle route has been put on hold. The city council rejected the planned “Bicycle Route 1”, which was supposed to run from Wilhelm-Zerr-Straße to Obere Mangfallstraße, due to difficulties with state funding. This decision came after residents expressed concerns about the loss of parking, particularly on Heubergstrasse. The city wanted to continue pursuing the cycling project, but the Free State set clear requirements: a binding implementation decision and a reliable cost calculation are necessary in order to receive funding. The project could only be divided into a north and a south section, which would make funding even more difficult, reports  ovb-online.de.

What began as a promising project turned out to be a chapter full of challenges. What was new was the state requirement that the cycle path must end at certain junctions in order not to endanger funding. Ultimately, the city council decided with one dissenting vote not to pursue the project. Nevertheless, the goal remains to implement smaller measures to increase road safety for all participants and to promote cycling in the city.

The positive approaches to traffic planning

Mayor Andreas Friedrich relies on transparency in traffic planning and emphasizes the importance of dialogue with citizens. This is also supported by bicycle commissioner Kölbl, who sees the discussion on sustainable transport planning as essential. Peter Kloo, a committed citizen from Kolbermoor, puts it in a nutshell: Change requires the participation of citizens.

Looking into the future: what does autumn bring?

Prien also plans to continue the series of events on traffic planning in the fall. Here, citizens have the opportunity to submit suggestions and ideas for improving the traffic situation by email. The focus is on promoting cycling as part of the transport transition, which has also become more important due to the corona pandemic. From the report of Difu shows that the increasing use of bicycles and the growing awareness of climate protection offer positive framework conditions for such projects.

A transport turnaround is reflected not only in the expanded use of cycle paths, but also through innovative approaches and decisive measures by municipalities. It remains to be hoped that Kolbermoor will seize these opportunities and show a good hand in transport policy. One thing is clear: cycling makes a significant contribution to achieving climate goals and improving the quality of life in cities.
