Bischofsheim i. d. Rhön is pulling out all the stops to secure the digital future of its citizens. The extensive expansion work with fiber optic house connections has begun, and with a clear goal: by autumn 2026 at the latest, almost all buildings in the city area should be supplied with the most modern internet infrastructure. Just 85 percent of the buildings in Bischofsheim will then be able to access the faster network, which means great progress for many residents. It is the city council's wish to provide all addresses with fiber optic connections. However, there were some areas in which not all addresses could be taken into account due to the existing good supply.
Financial framework conditions
This project requires not only commitment but also a significant budget. Overall, the investment costs are around 2.25 million euros, with the city of Bischofsheim i. d. Rhön has a personal contribution of 195,000 euros. The expansion of addresses that are not eligible for funding is secured by a new contract that was signed as part of the federal government's Gigabit Directive 2.0. This regulation, which provided a breath of fresh air in 2023, enables the large-scale expansion of the digital infrastructure in rural areas.
A total of another 42 kilometers of fiber optic cable will be laid, and 13 new network distributors will also be built. The city has contractually committed to completing the expansion work within 36 months. Mayor Georg Seiffert emphasizes the crucial importance of the digital infrastructure for residents. “A good internet connection is now a basic need in our modern world,” said the mayor.
