Ostallgäu daycare centers take off: digitalization for the little ones!

In a ceremonial setting on July 16, 2025, seven daycare centers from the Ostallgäu district were honored for their participation in the Bavaria-wide qualification program “Startchance kita.digital”. A total of 15 representatives in the district office received certificates that recognized their commitment and progress in digital education. What does it mean to use media responsibly in a time of digitalization? That is exactly the goal of this initiative, which was launched by the Bavarian Family Ministry.

The award-winning facilities are: AWO-Kinderhaus Schatztruhe and AWO-Kita Weidach from Füssen, Kindergarten St. Gordian, Kindergarten Epimach, as well as Kindergarten St. Valentin from Pforzen, Kita St. Gabriel from Füssen, Kita Pusteblume in Untrasried and Kita Sonnenschein in Obergünzburg. These kindergartens set an example for a modern educational approach that actively integrates digital media into everyday life. For a year, the daycare centers acquired valuable knowledge about the creative use of digital media in photo, audio and film work and worked intensively with parents.

A responsible use of media

Loud kita-digital-bayern.de Digitalization is an unstoppable process that is already shaping the lives of small children. Many children have already gained their first experience with digital media before entering daycare. It is the responsibility of the daycare centers to accompany them and enable them to use these technologies safely. Children have a right to participation and protection in the digital world. The campaign aims to promote this participation and give children the necessary skills.

The focus is on collaboration between daycare centers and parents: parents are actively involved in the digital education process through projects and training courses. This not only promotes children's technical know-how, but also a critical approach to digital content. The digitalization strategy of the daycare centers in Bavaria, which was decided in September 2020, offers the necessary support and infrastructure for this.

Success story “Startchance kita.digital”

Around 300 daycare centers in Bavaria have joined the program this year, and the response has been great. In a survey, 96 percent of previous participants appreciated the program and would recommend it to others. After completing the qualifications, the participating institutions become part of the “kita.digital.vernetzt” network, which includes over 1,420 Bavarian daycare centers. The implementation is carried out by the State Institute for Early Childhood Education and Media Literacy (IFP) and the JFF - Institute for Media Education, which, together with specially trained coaches, support the daycare centers on their way into the digital future.

District Administrator Maria Rita Zinnecker praised the institutions' extraordinary commitment to modern education that addresses the challenges of the 21st century. Such initiatives make it clear that digitalization in early childhood education is no longer a marginal issue, but a fundamental part of tomorrow's educational offerings. This development shows that Ostallgäu has a good hand for the future of children.
