A shocking incident occurred on Sunday evening on the district road between Haldenwang and Seebach in the Oberallgäu district. A 63-year-old Pedelec driver was hit by a car while crossing the road and sustained life-threatening injuries. As the Allgäu newspaper Reportedly, the 45-year-old driver was unable to react in time despite slamming on the brakes and hit the cyclist.
The impact was violent: the cyclist was thrown over the vehicle onto the road. Rescue workers were quickly on the scene and a rescue helicopter immediately took the seriously injured man to the hospital. Fortunately, the occupants of the car were uninjured. The amount of damage to the vehicle is estimated at around 8,000 euros. The road was closed for around an hour while the accident was being recorded, which led to temporary traffic chaos.
Accidents with Pedelecs are increasing
This incident is not the only serious accident that has occurred in the region. On March 7th of this year, a 75-year-old Pedelec rider died after a single-involved fall on the OA 4 district road between Reichenbach and Rubi. The elderly man fell for unknown reasons and sustained serious head injuries, despite wearing a bicycle helmet. After initial treatment on site, he was also taken to the hospital in a rescue helicopter, but died of his injuries a few days later Allgäu hit reported.
The police have initiated investigations in both cases and are hoping for further information to clarify the exact circumstances of the accidents. In view of the increasing number of accidents, the authorities advise people to be particularly careful on uneven or slippery roads - especially in changeable weather.
