Nuremberg in focus: human chain for Jewish life against anti-Semitism
On Saturday, September 13, 2025, Nuremberg was the scene of two impressive and contrasting rallies, both focused on the current war in the Middle East. The city was pulsating as around 500 people formed a human chain to take a stand against anti-Semitism. The event was organized by the Nuremberg Jewish Community and was intended to emphasize the protection of Jewish life in the region. Among the participants were prominent faces such as Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) and Nuremberg's Mayor Marcus König (CSU), both of whom emphasized the importance of Jewish life in Nuremberg and beyond.
“The community stands together here,” Herrmann said, while pointing to a worrying rise in anti-Semitic incidents in Bavaria, which numbered over 1,500 cases last year. The human chain that surrounded the Israelite Community on Arno-Hamburger-Strasse was a powerful symbol of cohesion and solidarity with the Jewish community.
Opposing demonstrations
At the same time, tens of thousands of people took part in a pro-Palestinian demonstration in downtown Nuremberg. With around 3,600 participants, this was one of the largest gatherings of its kind in the region, and significantly more people came than originally registered. The demonstrators expressed their outrage at Israel's policy in the Gaza Strip and demanded an end to Germany's political solidarity with Israel, the immediate cessation of arms deliveries and the opening of Gaza's borders to humanitarian aid.
These two events once again illustrate how the conflict in the Middle East is causing heated debates in both Germany and Bavaria. “Hate and agitation have no place in our society,” was a phrase from the human chain, which made it clear that it is time to take a stand against any form of discrimination. The slogan “We will not be divided” echoed through the crowd and was a powerful call for unity and solidarity in a time often marked by division.
Peaceful course of both events
Fortunately, both rallies were peaceful. The police monitored the events and were able to ensure a calmer atmosphere, despite the emotionally charged topics. In a context where so much is at stake, it was a positive sign that opinions were expressed respectfully.
In these turbulent times, it is more important than ever to speak out and stand up for a world where understanding and respectful discussion reign supreme. Both events in Nuremberg are a great demonstration of the commitment of citizens to defend themselves against anti-Semitism and at the same time draw attention to the situation of the Palestinians. This division in opinions shows the need for dialogue in a society that must work for peace and justice.
As in the reports from BR and Northern Bavaria can be read, it remains to be hoped that such initiatives will help to improve the social climate and actually promote peace. Because ultimately, we are all part of a complex human community in which understanding one another is the key to a better future.
