71-year-old pedestrian seriously injured in truck accident in Nuremberg

Today, at around 10:00 a.m., a serious traffic accident occurred in the Nuremberg district of Eibach, in which a 71-year-old pedestrian was hit by a truck. The accident happened on Eibacher Hauptstrasse when traffic there was at a standstill. The pedestrian apparently stepped onto the road to cross when the unfortunate incident occurred. Initial information suggests that the exact circumstances of the accident are still unclear. The truck ran over the elderly woman and she suffered serious injuries, but fortunately these are not life-threatening, according to those responsible.

Rescue workers were quickly on the scene and immediately took the injured pedestrian to the hospital. The Nuremberg traffic police took over the on-site investigation in order to reconstruct the accident in detail. Due to the accident, Eibacher Hauptstrasse was closed in both directions until around 11:00 a.m. We are currently investigating what exactly could have led to this unfortunate collision.

The dangers for pedestrians

Accidents involving trucks and pedestrians are not uncommon - and they are increasing, especially in urban areas. According to the insurer's accident research study, around as many pedestrians as cyclists are involved in traffic accidents caused by heavy trucks (12 tonnes or more) every year. These collisions usually occur during the day and within built-up areas. Seniors and often women are particularly affected due to the severity of the injuries.

What often leads to serious injuries is the fact that about half of accidents involving pedestrians result in them being run over. In addition to poor visibility of the road, technical aspects also need to be taken into account. The lack of effective assistance systems for trucks, such as turning assistants, contributes to the number of accidents remaining high. Important systems that can detect pedestrians in front of the vehicle and automatically brake in an emergency are currently missing. These facts make it clear that it is high time to improve safety measures to protect pedestrians and cyclists.

A clear need for action

Current studies show that a third of accidents between trucks and pedestrians could be prevented by better equipped vehicles. The Allianz Center for Technology examined data from 700 accidents. Experts are therefore calling for measures such as lower driver cabs and larger maneuvering windows to improve truck drivers' visibility. Such changes could help reduce the number of the most serious accidents, which often affect not only pedestrians but also cyclists.

In summary: yesterday's collision in Nuremberg is not just an isolated incident, but is part of a worrying statistic. It is all the more important that we draw attention to this issue and intensively discuss possible solutions. Ultimately, protecting vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists in our urban areas is essential.
