First HNU Science Slam: Research inspires audiences in Neu-Ulm!
Neu-Ulm, Deutschland - On June 11, 2025, the first Science Slam took place at the Neu-Ulm University (HNU), which was a complete success with around 80 guests. The moderation took over Professor Johannes Basch, who together with Dr. Anna Zeitler initiated the event. The aim of the slam was to put early research into the spotlight and to promote science communication. The eight participants offered exciting insights into various research projects in their short lectures.
The SLAM articles covered a wide range: from Kevin Bruno, who presented a serious game for the development of prostheses, to Josua Gläsner, who took up the topic of discrimination against interviews. Sandra Zscharnack also dealt with the phenomenon of Choice Overloads, while Robin Renoth gave a lecture on the deep geothermal energy. Further topics included sustainable university culture and retirement theories.
award winner and jury
The interdisciplinary jury, consisting of personalities such as Jens Kolb (HNU Vice President), Matthias Köppel (IHK Schwaben), Robert Schwarz (city of Neu-Ulm) and Hnu-Alumna Marie Heuermann, evaluated the appearances regarding their creativity, transfer potential and professional depth. Sandra Zscharnack won the victory in the "Students and Alumni" category, while Robin Renoth triumphed in the "Scientific employees" category. The audience award, sponsored by the IHK Schwaben Academy, went to the Hnu-Alumnus Josua Gläsner.
The winners were awarded certificates, 3D printed cups and city vouchers worth 150 euros. The event not only relied on the competition, but also on a creative distribution of knowledge and ideas.
entertaining supporting program
A special highlight was the guest contribution by Professor Harald Gerlach, who delighted the audience with his lecture on "100 years of cryptography in ten minutes". Mayor Katrin Albsteiger was also present and expressed her hope that there will be other science slams at the HNU in the future.
After the presentations, the evening offered room for conversations, snacks and drinks. This promoted the exchange among those present and brought together science and society. Professor Basche emphasized the importance of such events to intensify the dialogue between science and the public.
Overall, the first science slam at the HNU was not only a successful experiment, but also a step in the right direction to make research understandable and accessible to everyone. As reports [Schwäbische] (https://www.schwaebische.de/regional/ulm-alb-donau/ulster-science-slam-hnu-hnu-hnu-vulkt- Public-3655332), this event will certainly pave the way for similar formats and further increase the visibility of research in the region.
