Munich dares to do the Olympic state again: from the Olympic Park to the mega event!

München, Deutschland - Munich is planning a new application for the host of the Olympic Games, and the anticipation is noticeable. It is planned to carry out the games either 2036, 2040 or 2044. On October 26th there are now important decisions when it comes to voting on the Olympic application. In contrast to previous aspirations, Munich relies on sustainability and the use of existing sports facilities from the 1972 games, especially the Olympic Park, which is supposed to experience a comprehensive renewal. There should only be new stadiums in the form of provisional systems for specific sports such as railway bike or swimming. These temporary construction projects represent an estimated investment of approx. 930 million euros. The total costs for the games are estimated at around 5.3 billion euros, with important infrastructure investments such as the expansion of public transport and the creation of an Olympic village are not included, as the evening newspaper reported.

But where will everything take place? The Olympic Park will act as the heart of the games. Athletics and handball are intended here, while the beach volleyball tournament is to take place on Theresienwiese. Various sports facilities in the area are also upgraded in a real improvement in the existing offer: the regatta route in Oberschleißheim and a shooting range in Garching experience renovations that amount to up to 149 million euros. The Grünwald stadium and the riding facility in Riem are also part of the plan, as on the side of the Olympic acquisition Munich can be read.

The financial framework conditions

In a further step, the financial structure of the application is discussed. The costs for the international application process have decreased significantly, thanks to the requirements of the IOC, which were reduced by over 80 %. In earlier times, the cities had to raise between 30 and 40 million euros, while today it only costs between 5 and 8 million euros. The federal and state government also signaled that they are willing to provide financial support. A citizens' decision is expected to cost around 6.7 million euros.

One of the major plus points of the application are the transformative effects that are associated with it. Political decision-makers emphasize that in addition to the direct event costs (Ocog budget), large urban development projects are also associated with the Olympic Games (non-ocog budget). This means that Munich not only benefits for the duration of the games, but also receives long-term economic impulses, as similar events show in other cities, such as Euronews informed.

sustainability and future perspectives

The vision for the 2024 games in Paris, which many see as a role model, promotes a more environmentally friendly and financially viable implementation of the Olympic Games. According to estimates, Paris will provide about 95 % of his facilities in advance of the games, which Munich could consider pioneering. This shows how important it is to use existing systems and to strive for sustainable alignment without disproportionate debts. Later host cities often had to deal with financial problems, as the Montreal in 1976 or Athens in 2004 impressively show.

Thus those responsible in Munich have to think carefully, especially with a view to the recent experiences of other cities. An Olympics can bring great economic advantages, provided that it is planned and executed. In summary: Preparations for 2025 are promising, and the city is determined to have the application for a sustainable and profitable experience for everyone involved.
