Munich celebrates strong women: city birthday with royal stories!
The city's founding festival in Munich is quickly approaching, a very special event for all history buffs and culture lovers. On June 14th and 15th, 2025 it will be time again to celebrate Munich's history and discover many interesting facets. This year the event is particularly dedicated to the female personalities who have had a lasting influence on Bavarian history.
On Saturday, June 14th, visitors can look forward to two exciting themed tours. The “Queens and Princesses” tour is on the program at 12.30 p.m. Here the stories of Bavarian queens such as Caroline of Baden, Marie of Prussia and Therese of Bavaria come to life. Their influence on the country and their often tragic fates are brought into focus. At 2:30 p.m. it continues with “Nothing works without women,” where the old town becomes the scene of remarkable women. The very different roles that women took on in society are explored - from business women to monastery women to saints and market women. The same tours will take place at the same times on Sunday June 15th, so no one misses the chance to learn more about these fascinating stories - whether you stop by on Saturday or Sunday.
A look at the history of women in Bavaria
The role of women in Bavarian history will be particularly honored at the upcoming state exhibition “Twilight of the Gods II – The Last Monarchs” in Regensburg. South Germans reports that the focus is on notable women. While men have often determined the course of history, it was women like Princess Theodolinda, who ensured smart politics and fame in the 6th century, or Therese of Bavaria, who championed women's rights and became an important member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.
Women like Anita Augspurg and Sophia Goudstikker were pioneers of the early 20th century who advocated for education and career access. Running from June 23, 2021 to January 16, 2022, these stories will be explored and thought-provoking about how important these women's achievements are to today's rights and opportunities.
A century of women's suffrage
2023 marks the 100th anniversary of women's right to vote, another reason to critically reflect on the historical role of women. rbb highlights that many important women in the 19th century, such as Minna Cauer and Clara Zetkin, made a decisive contribution to democracy with their independence and their commitment to women's rights.
Today, 100 years later, the question arises about the current situation of women's rights. Despite all the progress, women are only represented at 31 percent in the Bundestag. The discussion about electoral law reform to create more gender equality is more current than ever and shows that the efforts of past generations must not be forgotten.
Attend the event and let yourself be carried away by the important role of women in Bavarian history. Munich has a lot to offer, and the stories of these remarkable women are just the beginning!
