Munich celebrates 867 years: a brilliant city birthday with music and enjoyment!

Next weekend, June 14th and 15th, 2025, Munich's 867th anniversary will be celebrated with a major city founding festival. Under the motto “Splendor, glory and enjoyment”, visitors can expect a diverse program in the old town, which will be celebrated in all its splendor on Marienplatz, Odeonsplatz and Wittelsbacherplatz. But don't worry, whether young or old, everyone gets their money's worth here!

The festival officially opens on Saturday at 11:15 a.m. at Marienplatz, where there will also be an extensive music program for entertainment. Entertaining brass music, cheerful dancing and soulful sounds from bands like the Paul Daly Band or “Da Rocka & da Waitler” ensure a good atmosphere. The entire musical line-up for Saturday offers a true feast for the senses, including an authentic Volxx music performance with the Heischneida at 5:15 p.m. The last performance of the first day of the festival is rounded off by “Da Rocka & da Waitler” at 8:30 p.m., followed by a Morisco dance at 12:15 p.m. and further highlights until the end at 10 p.m.

A festival full of variety

On Sunday, the festival attracts with a beer garden kick-off and a white sausage breakfast from 11 a.m., followed by an accordion orchestra from the city's singing and music school at 12:30 p.m. The culmination of the music program will take place at 7:30 p.m. with a performance by the MerQury Queen Tribute Band. During the entire time there are also numerous opportunities to experience Bavarian-Irish dances and enjoy culinary delicacies at Rindermarkt and Wittelsbacherplatz.

An extensive children's program awaits the little guests in the Old Courtyard, where the history of the city is conveyed in a playful way through various workshops and games. The various themed tours through the old town that are offered on both days will be particularly exciting. These tours begin at the city information stand at the New Town Hall every hour on the hour and offer interesting insights into the stories of “queens and princesses” as well as notable women in the city’s history.

Tradition meets creativity

At Odeonsplatz, visitors can experience craftsmanship up close: In a craftsman's village, around 15 guilds show off their skills and invite you to marvel, while artists present their handmade works at the art market on Sendlinger Straße and around the Rindermarkt. A special highlight is the 50 meter high Ferris wheel, which offers fantastic views of the social hustle and bustle. And if you feel like more action, you will find numerous rides and play stalls that invite you to marvel and take part.

Sunday will be particularly touching with a special offer of white sausages for just 1.50 euros - a price that is very popular in the city! And for lovers of flair and tradition, the wine princesses and festively dressed “Royal Highnesses” will also be there to offer autograph sessions and discussions.

Overall, the city's founding festival shows that Munich can not only look back on a rich history, but is still lively and full of joie de vivre today. The varied mix of music, cuisine, art and history promises to be an unforgettable weekend for all Munich residents and their guests.
