Art and crisis: SPIELART Festival celebrates 30 years with new splendor!
The SPIELART Festival in Munich is just around the corner and promises an exciting time full of creative performances and stimulating discussions. From October 17th to November 1st, 2025, the Bavarian capital will become a stage for international, contemporary theater art. The 16th edition of the festival continues a tradition that has been celebrated every two years since 1995 and this year also marks SPIELART's 30th birthday. This year the festival's theme is “SOME KIND OF TOMORROW,” inspired by writer Toni Morrison, and aims to explore the fault lines of the present. Over 30 productions will captivate viewers, including 7 premieres, 5 European premieres and 7 co-productions, such as [BMW Group].
The festival offers a colorful mix of art forms. In addition to the plays, various music events, from concerts to vibrant club culture, are also part of the program. Discourse formats and workshops are also planned that deal with current crises and historical points of reference. The first performance will be on opening day, October 17th, with “OCEAN CAGE” by Tianzhuo Chen and Siko Setyanto at Muffatwerk. This is the perfect start to two weeks full of inspiration and interaction, where international artists take viewers on a journey with their stories and movements.
Diversity and participation in focus
The festival's thematic focus focuses on social issues, including topics such as colonialism, apartheid and identity. Artists from around the world demonstrate how they use body language and movement to shape narratives that tap into both personal and collective memories. Festival entrance operator Sophie Becker attaches particular importance to the further development of traditional dance forms and their connection with contemporary theater, as tanznetz.de reports.
The festival series will also showcase some impressive dance productions including:
- Nadia Beugré: ÉPIQUE ! (FOR YIKAKOU) – 19. & 20. Oktober
- nora chipaumire: DAMBUDZO – 23. & 24. Oktober
- Jeremy Nedd & Impilo Mapantsula: BLUE NILE TO THE GALAXY AROUND OLODUMARE – 24. & 25. Oktober
- Dorothée Munyaneza: UMUKO – 27. & 28. Oktober
- Laila Soliman: STORY OF… – 29. & 30. Oktober
The over 14 venues in the city offer a suitable backdrop for the multitude of events. With a dedicated team that has been running the SPIELART Festival together with the city of Munich since 1979, a space is being created that promotes dialogue about socio-political issues.
